Department Manager Engineering 3 – Software: Flight Software
About the role
The Department Manager, Engineering M3 will lead the Software organization within Northrop Grumman Aeronautics Systems. This role is part of the Engineering Integration & Execution (EI&E) team on the Strike program. The Department Manager is responsible for the performance, development, and engagement of a large engineering organization.
Responsibilities
- Lead a large engineering organization consisting of section managers and individual contributors.
- Balance people leadership, technical oversight, and operational execution in a complex, program-driven environment.
- Align functional capabilities with program needs, enabling successful execution across cost, schedule, quality, and technical performance.
Requirements
- Must have a Bachelor of Science degree in a STEM discipline or a Master’s degree in a STEM discipline and 9 years of related engineering experience.
- Minimum 5 years of leadership experience, including first-level or higher people management leadership.
- Experience in leading, mentoring, and developing multidisciplinary engineering teams to deliver complex technical solutions, within cost and schedule constraints, across the various phases of the engineering lifecycle.
- Strong leadership, interpersonal, and written/oral communication skills, enabling effective engagement with cross-functional stakeholders and customers.
- Must possess an active U.S. Government Secret clearance that is in scope or currently enrolled in continuous evaluation, with the ability to obtain and maintain Special Access Program (SAP) access as determined by business needs.
Qualifications
- Relevant development experience in one or more software solutions in areas such as navigation, battle management and control, weapons management, vehicle management, etc. for complex air vehicles or spacecraft.
- Experience in adopting and tailoring corporate/sector/industry software standards, tools, and processes for use on programs.
- Experience with Software licensing models and managing software tool portfolios.
Skills
- Master’s or Ph.D. in Engineering or a related field.
- Prior people leadership experience of large teams (75+).
- Proven expertise in technical planning, risk&opportunity management, and driving project performance across cost, schedule, and technical quality.
- Experience with Earned Value Management Techniques (EVMS), Integrated Master Schedules (IMS), Basis of Estimates (BOEs), and cost-schedule-risk trade off management.
- Experience with the System Engineering Technical Review process (SRR, PDR, CDR and TRR).
- Experience identifying, developing, and managing performance metrics to support program and technical execution monitoring and control.
- Current U.S. Government TS/SCI and SAP clearances.
- Experience with Avionics, Vehicle, Systems Engineering, Global Supply Chain, or Test processes and tools where they overlap and/or are adjacent to Software processes and tools.
- Software supplier manager experience.
- Experience working with the DOD Dev*Ops Reference architecture.
- Experience with Northrop Grumman Real Time frameworks.
- Experience with C++, Java, Python development.
- Experience with Agile development techniques and tools including DevOps, DevSecOps, and Atlassian tool suite.

Pay
The annual salary range for this position is $166,700.00 - $250,100.00. Overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus may also be available.
