About the role

The Department Manager - DC manages and supports assigned team members to achieve business and operational objectives in safety, accuracy, production, and inventory control in the Distribution Center (DC). This role provides work direction and timely information to both the team members and leadership to help ensure overall operational success.

Responsibilities

Operations Management

  • Establish and execute plans that align to meeting operational and organizational objectives.
  • Ensure that all team members follow standard operating procedures and guidelines to ensure internal and regulatory compliance.
  • Identify and quickly resolve production and/or communication issues which may impact operational success.
  • Implement and execute processes that ensure accurate inventory processing and delivery to customers.

Safety and Compliance

  • Assure that all team members are working safely and address any behaviors or conditions that may increase safety risk.
  • Proactively partner with the Loss Prevention Team, DC and network leaders as needed to address safety or security concerns.
  • Conduct safety training and provide proper tools and PPE to ensure compliance with all relevant internal and regulatory safety and physical security guidelines and requirements.

Team Building

  • Handle interviewing, onboarding, and training of team members.
  • Provide the tools and resources needed for individuals and the team to achieve performance objectives and business goals.
  • Responsible for the growth and development of all direct reports.
  • Build a positive culture and environment that prioritizes engagement, recognition, open communication, respect, and trust.
  • Promptly address performance, attendance, behavior, and conduct issues on an ongoing basis through coaching, appropriate documentation, and corrective action as needed in partnership with Human Resources and the senior leadership team.

Other

  • Employ logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions and make effective decisions or recommendations.
  • Demonstrate strong interpersonal skills with the ability to communicate in a professional manner, maintain confidentiality, and sustain a respectful workplace.
  • Manage time effectively, achieving a balance of “on the floor” presence and office time.
  • Participate in special projects and perform other related duties as assigned.
  • Must be open/able to work all shifts, including evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required).
  • College degree (preferred).
  • Any other related training/education is a plus.
  • Previous supervisory experience in a comparable operational environment or successful completion of Michaels’ Leadership Training program.
  • Applicants in the U.S. must satisfy federal, state, and local legal requirements of the job.

Skills

  • Computer literacy, including proficiency in Microsoft Office applications and WMS applications.
  • Experience with labor management systems (LMS) (preferred).
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Excellent organizational and time management skills.
  • Proficiency with warehouse management systems (WMS).
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Good problem solving and change management skills.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including all days and shifts in support of business needs or special projects.
