About the role

The Department of Mechanical Engineering and Materials Science (MEMS) at the University of Pittsburgh seeks a visionary leader to serve as the Department Chair and Professor. The successful candidate will be expected to contribute to the advancement of mechanical engineering and materials science through research, teaching, and community engagement.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement a strategic plan for the MEMS Department that aligns with the university’s goals and objectives.
  • Lead the department in achieving high standards of research, education, and outreach.
  • Oversee the development and implementation of curricula and academic programs.
  • Engage in collaborative research projects and secure external funding.
  • Supervise faculty and staff, including hiring, mentoring, and performance evaluations.
  • Advocate for the department within the university and the broader academic community.
  • Ensure compliance with all institutional policies and procedures.

Requirements

  • A PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Materials Science, or a related field.
  • Proven track record of research excellence, including publication in leading journals.
  • Experience in developing and implementing educational programs at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
  • Strong leadership and management skills.
  • Ability to foster a diverse and inclusive academic environment.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.

Qualifications

  • Outstanding research record with evidence of impact.
  • Track record of securing external funding.
  • Experience in administrative roles, preferably in engineering or a related field.
  • Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion.
