Part-time position (16 hours per week) at the Montgomery County Detention Facility in Montgomery, AL. Work alongside correctional officers and medical professionals to provide dental care to incarcerated individuals in a secure, controlled environment.
About the role
This unique position allows you to make a difference in a diverse patient population with complex medical and dental needs. You will ensure quality dental care while protecting the rights, dignity, and health of patients in a correctional setting.
Responsibilities
- Diagnose, treat, and provide preventative dental care for patients
- Create treatment plans and perform dental procedures, including extractions and restorations
- Educate patients on proper oral hygiene practices
- Maintain accurate and detailed patient dental records
- Perform dental assessments, radiographic exams, and treatments, including emergency oral surgery, restorative dentistry, and periodontal therapy within the scope of general dentistry
- Formulate working diagnoses, develop and implement treatment plans, and evaluate/modify therapeutic regimens to promote positive patient outcomes
- Evaluate patients returning from offsite dental visits
- Participate in training and orientation of healthcare staff
- Provide oral hygiene education and discharge instructions to patients
- Supervise and coach dental assistants
- Ensure sterilization and disinfection of equipment
- Collaborate with other medical professionals to address patients’ oral health needs
Requirements
- Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD)
- Valid dental license in the state where the facility is located
- Active BLS CPR Certification (American Heart Association required)
- Current DEA registration
- Strong leadership, communication, and organizational skills
- Technical proficiency in providing a full range of dental services
- Knowledge of applicable laws, regulations, and industry standards
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of proprietary and sensitive information
- Adherence to a Code of Conduct and compliance with all facility correctional healthcare policies, procedures, and legal requirements
- Pass the facility’s criminal background check and drug screening
Physical Capabilities
- Ability to stand for long periods
- Lift and move patients (up to 50 pounds)
- Bend, squat, reach, push, pull, and walk significant distances
- Perform physically demanding tasks such as CPR while maintaining balance and endurance throughout a shift
