Dentist (Oral Surgery) - Maxillofacial

Duties

• Provides quality patient care in collaboration with other health care professionals
• Performs specific duties within his/her approved scope of practice
• Be experienced and competent in all phases of OMS including but not limited to dentoalveolar surgery and complex dental extractions
• Treatment of orofacial infections, treatment of orofacial trauma, preprosthetic surgery, placement of osseointegrated implants, diagnostic procedures consistent with the practice of OMS, surgical treatment of oral and maxillofacial pathosis, and grafting procedures including harvesting of graft material consistent with the practice of OMS
• Assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and post-treatment care in all the above areas
• Proficient in providing IV moderate sedation and certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
• Able to manage medically complex patients, including inpatients, and perform a history and physical
• Able to work collegially with other dentists and physicians and possess the skills, both interpersonal and professional, to work with residents in OMS, other dental specialties, and General Practice Dental Residents
• Develop and supervise a rotation program of University affiliate students, residents, and VA Dental Residents with the objective to improve the efficiency of operations and allow each Resident a fair opportunity for professional advancement
• Preventing, diagnosing, and treating diseases, injuries, and malformation of the teeth, jaws, and the oral cavity and its adjacent tissues and structures
• Performing comprehensive surgical care, including extractions (pulling teeth) and oral cancer screening
• Performing oral and facial reconstruction surgery to repair damage from traumatic injury or serious illness

Qualifications

• United States Citizenship: Must be a US Citizen
• Education: Degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or Dental Medicine resulting from a course of education in dentistry
• The degree must have been obtained from one of the schools approved by the Secretary of Veterans Affairs for the year in which the course of study was completed
• Residency or Comparable Experience: Completed or you are currently completing a residency program in general practice or specialty or comparable experience as a dentist actively involved in treating medically compromised patients
• Licensure and Registration: Currently hold or will hold a current, full, and unrestricted license to practice dentistry in a State, Territory, or Commonwealth of the United States or in the District of Columbia
• English Language Proficiency: In accordance with 38 U.S.C. 7402(d) and 7407(d), no person shall serve in direct patient care positions unless they are proficient in basic written and spoken English
