Dentist 1 (50%) (NY HELPS)

Duties

This Dentist 1 position is a direct service position. The incumbent will provide professional dental care for youth who are in the custody of OCFS by diagnosing and treating diseases, injuries and malformations of teeth and gums. The Dentist 1 will perform a full-range of dental duties in connection with the treatment of dental diseases or dental health problems requiring corrective restorative or preventive measures as required by agency policy and procedures.

• Treat dental diseases, injuries and malfunctions of teeth and gums.
• Perform restoration of simple and compound cavities.
• Administer anesthetics.
• Perform oral surgery commensurate with professional qualifications.
• Perform extractions of teeth.
• Clean teeth by scaling calculus.
• Treat teeth, mouth and gum infections with appropriate drugs or by surgery.
• Maintain written records of individuals dental treatments.
• Advise individuals about dental health practices.
• Instruct and direct paraprofessional dental staff in the performance of auxiliary duties.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of a license and current registration to practice dentistry in New York State. Must maintain a valid New York State license and registration.

Background Investigation Requirements

1. All prospective employees will be investigated through a Criminal Background Check (CBC), which includes State and federal Criminal History Record Checks. All convictions must be reported; conviction of a felony or misdemeanor, or any falsified or omitted information on the prospective appointee’s employment application, may bar appointment or result in removal after appointment. Each case will be determined on its own merits, consistent with the applicable provisions of State and federal laws, rules, and regulations. Prospective employees will be fingerprinted in order to obtain a record of their criminal history information, and may be required to pay any necessary fees.
2. All prospective employees will be screened against the Statewide Central Register of Child Abuse and Maltreatment (SCR).
3. For Division of Juvenile Justice and Opportunities for Youth (DJJOY) prospective appointees will be checked against the Staff Exclusion List (SEL) maintained by the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs. Prospective employees whose names appear on the SEL as having been found responsible for serious or repeated acts of abuse or neglect will be barred from appointment and may have their names removed from the eligible list(s) for the title(s) if applicable.
