Responsibilities

  • Examine, chart, and clean teeth, removing soft and hard deposits.
  • Take and develop dental X‑rays.
  • Prepare local anesthesia and assist in oral surgery and extractions.
  • Administer preventive treatments such as topical fluorides and pit‑and‑fissure sealants when necessary.
  • Provide instruction on oral hygiene and conduct educational programs.
  • Sterilize instruments and maintain the hygienic condition of equipment and the health‑care setting.
  • Mix amalgams, cements, silicates, and other materials as needed.
  • Requisition supplies, keep records, and perform related work.
  • Examine and prioritize patients requiring preventive and remedial dental care; follow up to ensure treatment is provided.
  • Examine cavities, sealants, and oral pathology for research purposes; chart and record findings.
  • Work with dentists and administrators to support screening for oral cancer, counsel and educate patients, and collect oral‑cancer data.
  • Train and guide Assignment Level I Dental Hygienists.
  • Conduct surveys and community‑outreach activities to identify and address dental disease trends.

Requirements

  • Valid license to practice as a Registered Dental Hygienist issued by the New York State Department of Education.
  • For Assignment Level II: at least one year of experience as a Registered Dental Hygienist (in addition to meeting the Level I qualifications).
