About the role
Be a part of the mission at Whitney Young Health (WYH) to provide high quality healthcare that is affordable and accessible to our diverse community. This is a full-time position, 40 hours a week.
Responsibilities
- Assists Staff Dentists with the treatment of Whitney Young Health (WYH) Dental patients.
- Receives, seats, and prepares patients for dental treatment.
- Reviews the dental record to ensure it is in order and the appropriate radiographs are available.
- Ensures appropriate instruments and materials are ready for use by the dentist.
- Prepares dental restorative and impression materials and anesthetic syringes.
- Takes accurate blood pressure readings.
- Accurately records (dental charting) existing conditions and treatment to be done as per dentist direction.
- Properly screens urgent care and emergency walk-in patients and takes necessary dental radiographs.
- Utilizes acceptable technical skills in assisting the dentist during all phases of treatment.
- Consistently prepares patients for dismissal, confirms future appointments, and reinforces post-treatment instructions.
- Prepares the operatory between patients using proper disinfection and infection control procedures in a timely manner.
- Creates dental claims on eCW as instructed by the provider.
- Keeps the lab, dark room, and sterilization area clean and orderly using infection control procedures.
- Maintains Infection Control logs.
- Appropriately maintains necessary supplies in the treatment area.
- Uses various dental and office equipment and follows preventive maintenance procedures.
- Properly exposes, processes, and mounts dental radiographs.
- Disinfects and prepares soiled instruments for sterilization.
- Performs weekly maintenance and spore testing on the autoclaves as assigned.
- Operates the autoclave and sterilizes instruments.
- Files and retrieves dental records.
- Pours study models.
- Performs backup reception duties as needed.
- Seeks direction and guidance from the dentist in performing duties regarding patient care.
- Demonstrates excellence in both internal and external customer service.
- Understands and effectively communicates HIPAA compliance, corporate compliance, and client confidentiality.
- Ensures compliance with local, state, and federal regulations (e.g., DHHS HRSA and NYSDOH) and all accreditation standards (e.g., Joint Commission and NCQA-PCMH).
- Adheres to the National Patient Safety Goals as defined by the Joint Commission and Whitney M. Young Jr. Health Center.
- Completes other duties as assigned.
Requirements
- High school graduate or equivalent.
- Promotional opportunities based on years of experience (i.e., Dental Assistant 0 = no experience; Dental Assistant 1 = 1 year of assisting experience; Dental Assistant 2 = 2+ years of assisting experience).
Qualifications
Preferred: Certified by an accredited Dental Assistant Program plus one year of experience as a Dental Assistant.
