About the role

The Driver is responsible for safely transporting exterior building products to various customer jobsites. This role requires excellent driving skills, adherence to traffic laws, excellent communication, and a commitment to providing outstanding customer service.

Responsibilities

  • Safely operate company vehicles to transport and pick up building materials at designated locations.
  • Adhere to all traffic laws, regulations, and company policies.
  • Conduct pre-trip and post-trip inspections of the vehicle to ensure safety and report any issues.
  • Maintain a clean and well-organized vehicle interior.
  • Use proof of delivery (POD) to take pictures of the job site prior to making a delivery, including:
    • Pictures of the product delivered by the driver.
    • Pictures of the location if delivery is on pavement.
    • Customer waiver consent form if the delivery area looks questionable.
  • Communicate and work effectively with customers, dispatchers, management, and other employees.
  • Generate advance communication (text or phone call) to the customer regarding product delivery.
  • Follow delivery routes and schedules accurately and promptly.
  • Load product onto the truck for specific deliveries within a route, which may include multiple trips from the branch.
  • Complete necessary paperwork and maintain accurate trip records.
  • Respond to emergencies or unexpected situations calmly and efficiently, including contacting the department manager.
  • Safely drive the delivery vehicle to the customer jobsite and unload product, often unassisted.
  • Ensure product is protected from inclement weather.
  • Stay beyond scheduled time to help pull orders for delivery the following day, if needed.
  • Read work orders/invoices to determine product needs for customer pick-up or delivery.
  • Frequently lift and carry building materials weighing up to 100 pounds by hand.
  • Operate a forklift to load customer vehicles, load delivery trucks, unload vendor trucks, move product in stock, etc.
  • Work in the warehouse as needed to put away returns, stock bays, clean warehouse areas, and assist walk-in customers.
  • Appropriately receive and check in product.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as assigned.

Customer Service & Technology Interaction

  • Provide personalized customer service through direct in-person and phone conversations.
  • Use mobile apps and other technology to communicate with dispatchers and customers, including updates on arrival times and route changes.
  • Maintain a professional and friendly demeanor in all interactions, both in-person and electronically.
  • Handle customer feedback and complaints efficiently to ensure customer satisfaction.

Requirements

  • Valid New York State or Pennsylvania Commercial Class A or B driver license with a clean driving record.
  • Minimum of 1 year of professional driving experience is preferred.
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED); or one to three months related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of building materials product is preferred.
  • Forklift and/or Moffett experience are preferred.
  • Excellent knowledge of and adherence to traffic laws and road safety regulations.
  • Ability to interpret and operate GPS and other navigation tools.
  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and customer service skills.
  • Ability to lift and carry building materials weighing up to 100 pounds by hand.
  • Ability to pass a DOT physical and DOT drug screening.
  • Ability to meet FMCSA Vision requirements, including:
    • At least 20/40 vision in each eye (with or without correction).
    • A 70-degree field of vision.
    • Ability to recognize red, green, and amber traffic lights.
    • If standards with one eye cannot be met, a special Vision Evaluation Report (Form MCSA-5871) from an eye doctor is required.
  • Ability to meet FMCSA Hearing requirements, including:
    • Perceive a forced whispered voice in the better ear at not less than five feet with or without a hearing aid.
    • If tested by audiometric device, no average hearing loss in the better ear greater than 40 decibels at 500Hz, 1000Hz, and 2000Hz with or without a hearing aid.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Strong basic math skills, including the ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure.
  • Hazardous Materials (HazMat) endorsement or must obtain it within the first 3 months of employment if hired without it.
  • Air Brakes endorsement.
