About the role

We are seeking Deckhands/Skilled Laborer II for marine projects at the Benjamin Harrison Memorial Bridge in Hopewell, VA and other projects based out of Baltimore, MD. Must be willing to travel and able to work 7-day/12-hour shifts, including day or night shifts.

This role works onboard watercraft such as barges, crew boats, push boats, and tug boats.

Responsibilities

• Handle lines to moor vessel to wharves, tie up vessel to another vessel, or rig towing lines.
• Handle pushing gear and mooring lines.
• Communicate via radio with Captain or Foreman to report distance, aids to navigation, obstructions, and other vessels.
• Sweep and wash decks to remove dirt, oil, and debris; perform general housekeeping duties.
• Stand steering watches or lookout watches while underway.
• Move controls or turn handwheels to tighten/loosen push cables.
• Load or unload material from vessels.
• Chip and clean rust spots on decks, hull, and superstructure; prime and paint these areas.
• Lubricate machinery and equipment.
• Assist with vessel maintenance, including caring for tools and equipment.
• Splice and repair cables and ropes.
• Examine and tighten cables that hold vessels in tow to ensure they are snug.
• Work in a safe and responsible manner at all times.

Requirements

• Ability to follow directions.
• Experience handling lines to moor vessels.
• Ability to use basic hand tools such as hammers, wrenches, bars, axes, and razor knives.

Qualifications

Merchant Marine and Able-Bodied Seaman credentials preferred.

Work Environment

The role involves regular exposure to moving mechanical parts and outside weather conditions. Work is performed on barges, boats, and floating equipment, often requiring climbing between vessels at different levels above the water. Employees are regularly exposed to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, and vibration. Occasional exposure to high, precarious places and moderate to loud noise levels is expected.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to:

• Stand, walk, use hands to finger, handle, or feel, and reach with hands and arms.
• Talk or hear.
• Occasionally climb or balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.
• Regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.
• Work or walk on uneven ground on floating equipment, with access and egress requiring ability to move from moving surfaces due to water motion.

Specific vision abilities required include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Pay

Expected base pay range for this position is $21.00/hr – $28.00/hr. This range reflects factors such as education, experience, licensure, certifications, geographic location, and internal equity. The range does not include potential incentive pay or benefits.
