About the School

The University of Wisconsin–Madison School of Nursing (SoN), established in 1924, develops nurse leaders, innovators, and advocates through research, education, practice, policy, and outreach. As a leading nursing research institution in Wisconsin and the nation, the SoN impacts health through nursing science and education, including neonatal and pediatric nursing, aging research, patient-centered intervention research, and health systems innovation.

The SoN comprises more than 87 clinical and tenure-track faculty members and 84 staff, with an enrollment of over 1,200 pre-nursing and matriculated nursing students. The School offers the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (B.S.N.), Doctor of Nursing Practice (D.N.P.), and Doctor of Philosophy in Nursing (Ph.D.) degrees, along with five certificate programs and continuing education programs.

About the Role

The Dean serves as the chief academic and executive officer of the School of Nursing, reporting to the Chancellor through the Provost. This role oversees all aspects of the School’s operations and strategic direction.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee faculty and staff development, including hiring, evaluation, and professional growth.
  • Manage personnel, budget planning, and financial resources.
  • Lead research initiatives, curriculum development, and student academic affairs.
  • Oversee facilities, operations, and infrastructure.
  • Spearhead fundraising, advancement, and external partnerships.

Requirements

  • Earned research doctorate (Ph.D. or equivalent) in nursing or a related field. If the research doctorate is not in nursing, candidates must hold a graduate degree in nursing.
  • Demonstrated record of excellence in research, teaching, and service to qualify for tenure at UW–Madison.
  • Eligibility for registered nurse licensure in Wisconsin.
