Dean of Students (anticipated vacancy)

Function

The Dean helps students resolve non-academic problems that may interfere with them receiving the greatest benefit from the school's educational opportunities.

Duties

  • Maintain proper school discipline. This includes building tours, classroom checks, cafeteria control and direction, and issuance of visitor passes.
  • Make home contacts relative to absence from school or classes, and student misbehavior.
  • Share arrangements for bus schedules, student I.D. cards, parking stickers, supervision of parking areas, and student assemblies with other deans.
  • Enforce all regulations regarding student conduct.
  • Maintain accurate school records of attendance, tardiness, and student misbehavior.
  • Serve as liaison between the school and parents, court, community agencies, and police authorities.
  • Work closely with guidance counselors in the identification and counseling of potential dropouts and students with special problems.
  • Assume responsibility, as directed by the Principal, for conducting and supervising suspensions, detentions, and recommendations for expulsion.
  • Assist in the development and administration of practices dealing with campus control and security.
  • Assist with campus supervision.
  • Assist in the interpretation of school and district programs, policies, and procedures to students, parents, staff, and community.
  • Participate in the development and implementation of school procedures designed to effect positive student behavior in the school.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Hold a current Illinois Professional Educator License (PEL) or Educator License with Stipulations (ELS);
  • Five years of successful experience as a high school teacher in public education.

Physical Demands and Work Environment

Physical demands: While performing duties of job, employee is occasionally required to stand; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; talk and hear. Employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Work environment: The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.

Terms of Employment

  • Ten-month work year
  • Starting annual salary (including dean stipend) between $76,600 and $158,199
  • Teachers Retirement System of Illinois (TRS) pension
