About the role
The Dean of Student Services at Los Angeles Southwest College (LASC) will oversee the following areas: Foster Kinship Education, GATEWAYS Housing, Guardian Scholars, Health Center, International students, LGBTQIA+, NextUp, and Veterans.
Responsibilities
- Provide administrative oversight for the student service areas of Foster Kinship Education, GATEWAYS Housing, Guardian Scholars, Health Center, International students, LGBTQIA+, NextUp, and Veterans.
- Work under the direction of the Vice President of Student Services.
- Coordinate the hiring, training, supervision, and evaluation of faculty and office staff within the areas of responsibility.
- Maintain appropriate quantitative measurements, statistical reports, and other records to assess accomplishments and future needs.
- Compile and analyze data to support campus efforts in developing and maintaining programs, including information on grants and other student success opportunities.
- Ensure compliance with all collective bargaining agreements.
- Represent Student Services on various committees and subcommittees under the college's participatory governance structure.
- Serve as a resource to the Vice President on issues pertaining to the stated division's departments.
- Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.
Requirements
A Master's degree from an accredited college or university.
Completion of one year of full-time formal training, internship or leadership experience reasonably related to the administrative assignment.
Sensitivity to and an understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, disability, and ethnic backgrounds of community college students.
Qualifications
- Knowledge of curriculum, new program orientation and program development.
- Knowledge and experience in curriculum development, scheduling, enrollment management and compliance with regulatory and contractual requirements.
- Experience in providing leadership to core areas associated with the division.
- Experience working with both student services and academic departments.
- An understanding of the teaching/learning process.
- Demonstrated leadership experience in planning, organizing and implementing instructional and/or student service related programs.
- Demonstrated experience in interpreting, articulating and implementing a variety of laws, regulations, policies and procedures including those related to student discipline.
- Understanding of and commitment to participatory governance.
- Sensitivity to changing student population, ethnic and cultural diversity within those populations and the academic programs necessary to serve these students.
- Knowledge of the management information needs of effective instructional programs and uses of various computer resources to meet these needs.
- Experience and demonstrated knowledge of budget development and implementation and accounting procedures for regular and Specially Funded Programs including development of audit trails.
- Possess personal characteristics necessary for working with students, employees and the public in an administrative capacity including: stability, good judgment, tact and the ability to cooperate with coworkers.
- Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to produce reports and other necessary documents.
- Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain positive and effective working relationships with on-campus groups (including students, faculty administrators and staff, as well as off-campus community and educational partners).
- Experience working as a team member on departmental committees and campus-wide groups, and with community leaders.
