About the role
The University of Houston (UH) seeks a visionary and dynamic leader to serve as the Dean of the Gerald D. Hines College of Architecture and Design. This role is a singular leadership opportunity at one of the nation’s most dynamic research universities, situated in a city that is simultaneously a global built-environment laboratory and a burgeoning center of architectural and design culture.
Responsibilities
- Direct and oversee the programs of the College, developing strategic directions in line with the University’s Strategic Plan.
- Articulate the long-range vision, specific strategies, and detailed administrative and fiscal provisions to ensure the continued excellence of the College programs and faculty.
- Work closely with the University’s executive leadership and other University Deans on multidisciplinary hiring and research and teaching programs.
- Promote the University and the Hines College, actively participating in hands-on management and open decision-making in a culture of shared governance.
- Recruit, appoint, reappoint, promote, and tenure faculty in the College.
- Oversight the College’s budget and strategic allocation of resources, including funding for faculty research, extramural research, and graduate students.
- Coordinate the activities of program directors, faculty, associate and assistant Deans, and staff.
- Allocate academic and research facilities, plan for future facilities’ needs, oversee non-faculty staffing decisions, and develop collaborative teaching and research programs with other UH colleges and divisions.
- Represent the needs of the Hines College and UH to external constituents and donors, increasing philanthropic donations and stimulating productive partnerships.
Requirements
The successful candidate should possess:
- An outstanding record of scholarly and/or creative achievement commensurate with appointment as a full professor in one of the College’s programs.
- A terminal degree in architecture, design, or a closely related field.
- The capacity to bridge theory and practice.
- The ability to serve as an engaging fundraiser and advocate on behalf of the Hines College at the local, national, and international levels.
- Proven people skills and highly effective interpersonal abilities, with a commitment to providing students with a high-quality educational experience and fostering a compassionate and empathetic servant leadership style.
