Daytime School Custodian
St. Therese School, a PK-Grade 8 Catholic Elementary School located in Succasunna, NJ, is seeking a dependable, hardworking, and service-oriented School Custodian to help maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for students, faculty, staff, and visitors. About the role
Under the direct supervision of the Principal and the Director of Facilities, the School Custodian performs general cleaning and maintenance in school buildings and grounds; maintains equipment in functional condition; and provides cleaning and custodial assistance to students, teachers, visitors, and others as necessary. This position is responsible for the daily cleanliness, maintenance, and operational needs of the school during the school day.
Responsibilities
- Checks and secures building at beginning and end of shift to ensure safety and cleanliness.
- Prepares the gym for daily lunch service by setting up tables and chairs.
- Sets up trash and recycling stations, cleaning supplies, and lunch service materials for volunteers.
- Sweeps and mops the gym during and after lunch periods.
- Responds to spills and emergency cleanups throughout the school day.
- Washes walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and sills.
- Cleans classrooms, restrooms, hallways, offices, and common areas as needed.
- Removes graffiti and cleans glass areas.
- Replaces light bulbs and performs minor maintenance and repairs.
- Replenishes paper products and custodial supplies.
- Monitors custodial inventory and communicates supply needs.
- Assists with school event setup and breakdown.
- Sets up and escorts vendors on campus when needed.
- Receives deliveries, assists in unloading trucks, and stores supplies.
- Delivers supplies and materials to classrooms, bathrooms, and other areas of the building.
- Clears snow from entrances and walks, spreads sand and ice-melting chemicals.
- Performs grounds-keeping duties, clears debris, and maintains grounds.
- On-call 24/7 for monitoring alarm center.
- Performs general cleaning and repair work during school vacations.
- Assists parents and visitors with special events and programs.
- Performs other related tasks as assigned by the supervisor.
Equipment
- Uses hand tools of trade and related power equipment, including brooms, mops, floor cleaning and waxing machines, vacuum cleaners, snow blowers, shovels, power mowers, and hand tools.
Safety Requirements
- Follows all applicable safety rules, procedures, and regulations governing the proper use of tools and power equipment.
- Wears appropriate safety gear, including masks.
- Must comply with the school district's chemical hygiene program and follow MSDS sheets.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or equivalent education to successfully perform the duties of the position.
- Previous experience in building and cleaning maintenance desirable.
- Ability to perform physical work, including lifting up to 50 pounds, bending, climbing stairs, and standing for extended periods.
- Strong organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong attention to detail and reliability.
- Ability to work independently and communicate effectively with faculty, staff, and vendors.
- NJ Motor Vehicle Operator's license or ability to provide own transportation.
- Must successfully complete all required diocesan background checks and Safe Environment requirements.
