Position Summary
The Daytime Hospitalist provides high-quality inpatient care at Loretto Hospital on a 7-on / 7-off block schedule. This role manages a diverse adult inpatient population, performs core bedside procedures, and collaborates closely with nursing, case management, and specialty teams to ensure safe, efficient patient throughput.
Key Responsibilities
- Inpatient Management — Provide comprehensive care for adult medical inpatients, including admissions, daily rounding, care coordination, and discharge planning.
- Procedural Competency — Independently perform required bedside procedures: Central Venous Catheter Placement, Intubation if clinically needed, and Rapid Response Leadership.
- Rapid Response Leadership — Lead or participate in Rapid Response and Code Blue events.
- Interdisciplinary Collaboration — Work closely with nursing, case management, social work, and consulting specialists.
- Documentation Excellence — Complete timely, accurate documentation in the EMR to support clinical care, billing, and compliance.
- Quality & Safety — Adhere to hospital quality metrics, participate in performance improvement initiatives, and follow evidence-based guidelines.
- Patient & Family Communication — Provide clear, compassionate communication regarding diagnoses, treatment plans, and discharge expectations.
Schedule & Coverage Expectations
- 7-on / 7-off daytime schedule (12-hour shifts).
- Average daily census aligned with hospitalist staffing model.
- Participation in rapid response, codes, and procedure coverage during scheduled shifts.
- No outpatient responsibilities.
Required Qualifications
- MD or DO with completion of an ACGME-accredited Internal Medicine or Family Medicine residency.
- Board Certified or Board Eligible in Internal Medicine or Family Medicine.
- Active Illinois medical license (or ability to obtain).
- Current BLS and ACLS certification.
- Demonstrated proficiency in: Central lines, Intubation (required with additional anesthesia/ED backup available if needed).
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior hospitalist experience in an urban or community hospital setting.
- Experience managing high-acuity patients with limited subspecialty support.
- Comfort with independent decision-making and procedural autonomy.
Reporting Structure
- Reports to: Hospitalist Medical Director / Chief Medical Officer.
- Works collaboratively with: Nursing leadership, Case management, Emergency Department, Subspecialty consultants, Ancillary services.
Performance Metrics
- Length of stay (LOS) efficiency.
- Readmission rates.
- Documentation quality & timeliness.
- Procedure success and complication rates.
- Patient satisfaction and communication scores.
- Participation in quality and safety initiatives.
Pay Range
$250,000 per year
