Day-to-Day Substitute Custodial/Maintenance Worker

Appalachia Intermediate Unit 8 (AIU8) is one of 29 intermediate units providing services for member school districts, including student services, training and technical assistance, online learning, and customized programs. Serving approximately 47,000 students across Blair, Somerset, Bedford, and Cambria counties, AIU8 operates five office locations: Altoona, Duncansville, Ebensburg, Richland, and Somerset.

About the role

Ensure a safe, clean, comfortable, and presentable environment for Intermediate Unit 8 employees, supporting their daily work.

Responsibilities

• Daily trash pickup
• Vacuuming and dry mopping (dusting) floors
• Wet mopping, stripping, and finishing floors
• Buffing and treating finished floors
• Carpet cleaning
• Cleaning bathrooms
• Dusting furniture and other surfaces
• Cleaning windows internally and externally
• Arranging furniture and equipment to meet personnel needs
• Compliance with material safety requirements
• Grass cutting and trimming
• Policing of areas
• Cleaning parking lots, shipping and receiving areas, and walkways
• Snow removal and treating areas for ice or snow
• Summer cleaning of apartments and classrooms
• Changing light bulbs
• Interior and exterior painting
• Following additional directives from the facilities manager
• Demonstrating regular and timely attendance
• Maintaining positive working relationships with other employees

Requirements

• Familiarity with custodial/maintenance equipment and procedures
• Good interpersonal skills and willingness to work a flexible schedule
• Ability to follow all safety procedures and complete Powered Industrial Truck (forklift) Operator Safety Training
• Ability to work unsupervised and collaboratively with others
• Ability to complete assigned work within appropriate timelines
• Ability to follow written and verbal directives
• Upon hire, obtain a certificate of medical examination and tuberculosis test as required by Chapter 14 of the Public School Code
• Current and acceptable clearances: Act 34 (PA State Police), Act 151 (PA Child Abuse History), Act 114 (PDE Fingerprinting), PDE6004 (Arrest & Conviction), and Act 168 (PA Sexual Misconduct background)

Qualifications

• Experience in custodial and/or maintenance of commercial buildings and grounds
• Background in construction or construction education

Work Environment and Physical Demands

• Normal office settings, storage areas, and preschool classrooms
• Exterior of buildings, including lawns, wooded areas, flat roofs, and parking lots
• Requires standing, walking, sitting, squatting/stooping, reaching, and lifting items of varying weights
• Most activities involve walking and standing
• Must be able to accurately perform assigned responsibilities and tasks
• Good communication skills appropriate to the position
• Attendance patterns and daily routine conducive to completing assignments
• Ability to perform essential job functions with or without reasonable accommodation
