About the role
The Direct Support Lead provides programmatic assistance to Direct Support Professionals and the individuals they support. The Lead ensures individuals experience valued roles in the community and enriches their quality of life through training, instruction, and inclusion techniques. The role also includes providing supervisory support as directed by the supervisor or director, adhering to the policies of The Arc Eastern Connecticut, Inc.
Schedule
Monday - Friday, 7:30 AM - 3:30 PM
Responsibilities
- Promotes empowering and engaged supports that model appropriate and mission-based interactions.
- Supports supervisors and the director in ensuring the health, safety, and well-being of individuals, aiding Direct Support Professionals as needed.
- Provides supervisory support in the absence of the director and supervisors.
- Provides individualized supports, services, and advocacy to persons with intellectual and developmental disabilities to facilitate their full participation and inclusion in the community.
- Assists individuals in community, social, and leisure activities, daily living skills, recreation, and other identified skill areas.
- Adapts activities to maximize the individual’s potential.
- Assists individuals with daily living tasks including dressing, toileting, and dining.
- Ensures the safety of all individuals, including proper use of equipment, facilities, and vehicles.
- Reports all accidents and incidents immediately to their supervisor and provides incident reports according to DDS and Arc safety policies.
- Assists in coordinating transportation for individuals using personal vehicles, Arc vehicles, or community resources.
- Teaches life skills to individuals as needed.
- Develops, implements, and maintains neat, accurate, and comprehensive daily records, including annual reviews, service plans, and approved behavioral programs.
- Transfers and lifts individuals as needed.
- De-escalates behaviors according to DDS policies and procedures, potentially without assistance.
- Assists in cleaning and maintaining Arc facilities and vehicles.
- Helps implement components of the Person-Centered Plan, including behavior supports, programs, and documentation.
- Other duties as assigned to maintain service quality.

- Maintains a professional and positive attitude when dealing with individuals, staff, families, the public, and outside representatives.
- Works cooperatively with all departments.
- Attends all agency staff meetings and training sessions.
- Keeps required trainings up to date and maintains attendance.
- Keeps supervisor informed of significant events or the need to modify operations/activities.
- Serves as a positive and appropriate role model for individuals.
- Provides advocacy for individuals based on their personal choice and individual plan.
- Develops and maintains positive relationships with individuals, their families, and providers.
- Responds to the needs of individuals, families, and providers in a timely and professional manner.
- Possesses a valid driver’s license, privately owned vehicle, and evidence of insurance.
Requirements
- High School Diploma or GED required.
- Minimum one year of experience in the health/human services field preferred.
- Valid driver’s license, maintained for the duration of employment.
- Must obtain and maintain CPR, PMT, First Aid, and other pertinent certifications; may require medication certification.
- Able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds and participate in lifts, transfers, and behavioral or physical interventions when necessary.
- May be exposed to risk of injury or occupational health hazards.
