Day Services Direct Support Professional
About the role
The Instructor in the Adult Training department is responsible for the supervision and support of the individuals served. The instructor assists in the implementation of care while attending to and respecting individual needs to support growth and independence. The instructor is responsible for adhering to corporate policies and procedures as well as state regulations. The instructor provides supervision and support in the program and the community.
Responsibilities
- Provide a caring, safe environment by attending to individual needs, respecting differences, and supporting growth and independence.
- Assist each program participant with personal hygiene, dressing, eating, and other necessary skills.
- Attend to program participants’ emotional, physical, or medical needs and report concerns to responsible personnel.
- Provide input into the planning and development of Individual Support Plans (ISPs) by attending team meetings.
- Assist in the implementation of ISPs and related activities, including social, recreational, educational, and developmental.
- Ensure compliance with corporate policies, procedures and Office of Developmental Programs’ regulations.
- Attend required meetings.
- Provide transportation for program participants.
- Locate and develop meaningful community activities.
- Serve as ambassador for program participants and the corporation, promoting the mission at all times.
- Auxiliary duties may include assisting program participants in identifying and maintaining natural supports, maximizing opportunities for choice and decision making, and providing first aid in emergency situations.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or general education development certificate. Some college preferred with background in education or related human services field.
- Experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities preferred; customer service experience.
- Valid PA driver’s license with acceptable driving record.
Compensation and Benefits
Commensurate with experience.

Biweekly hours: 75
Schedule
Week 1: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:00pm.
Week 2: Monday-Friday, 8:30am-4:00pm
Physical Requirements and Work Environment
The physical demands outlined here are necessary for an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of the instructor’s job. Reasonable accommodation can be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions. Tasks may involve reaching above the shoulder and below the waist, as well as lifting documents or materials. Responsibilities include pushing and maneuvering individuals in wheelchairs, assisting individuals in the restroom by transferring them to/from toilets or changing tables, rolling and lifting them for cleaning and changing, and helping individuals get in and out of vehicles. Instructors must use proper lifting techniques and be capable of lifting and/or moving up to 35 pounds. The instructor must physically assist individuals with limited mobility, including supporting them to maintain stability while walking and preventing falls. Frequently sit, stand, and walk on level surfaces throughout the day. Walking up and down stairs periodically throughout the day is also required. Finger dexterity and close vision are essential. The ability to move within the personal workspace and to and from other areas of the office or building is necessary. The instructor may be exposed to typical seasonal weather conditions. The role may involve repetitive movements when providing first aid in emergency situations, such as administering back blows, abdominal thrusts, and CPR.
