Information TechnologyFull-time

Parttime (32 uur per week), bepaalde tijd.

About the role

As Data Manager Archive at Naturalis, you will ensure our unique archives and image collections are seamlessly connected—both internally with our millions of specimens and externally with (inter)national heritage collections. This crucial role impacts the global discoverability of our digital heritage.

You will play a central role in a major digital catch-up effort, elevating the quality of metadata for our archives and image collections to the highest level. You will create the essential link between history and objects by connecting archival data to Naturalis’s specimen collections (natural history objects). Additionally, you will ensure our data complies with national standards from the Netwerk Digitaal Erfgoed (NDE), aligning our heritage with the renewed national infrastructure and connecting it directly to collections from other (inter)national heritage institutions.

Responsibilities

  • Unlock and connect our unique historical sources (such as expedition photos, field notes, and films) with the natural history collection.
  • Clean and standardize metadata using thesauri and ensure submission to the NDE Dataset Register.
  • Help researchers worldwide access the context behind our objects by creating meaningful connections.
  • Migrate historical databases to our central archive system and contribute to the development of the archive module.
  • Write clear manuals to secure new workflows and establish information policies according to FAIR principles and the Digital Heritage Reference Architecture (DERA).
  • Collaborate closely with the Collection and Digital Solutions & Infrastructures teams.

Requirements

  • HBO or university-level thinking and working (work and thinking level).
  • Knowledge of and practical experience with databases and registration systems, preferably within the heritage or museum sector (such as archive and collection management systems).
  • Knowledge of and practical experience with the preservation and disclosure of archive and media collections.
  • Extensive experience cleaning, transforming, and structuring large datasets (e.g., with OpenRefine or Python) and writing queries in SQL or SPARQL.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of the National Strategy for Digital Heritage, the NDE landscape, and standards such as schema.org, EDM, and/or data modeling.

With your analytical and precise approach, you tackle complex historical datasets to structure them accurately. You work independently on data cleaning but also easily connect with others. Your enthusiastic and clear communication effortlessly convinces colleagues of the importance of data quality and open standards.

Benefits

  • Gross monthly salary of €3,768 to €4,897 for a full-time position (36 hours per week).
  • End-of-year bonus of 3.4% of your gross annual salary and 8% holiday allowance.
  • 27 vacation days per year for a full-time position, plus 1 extra day to use for a holiday that is important to you.
  • Travel expense reimbursement, depending on your mode of travel.
  • Pension scheme through PFZW, with Naturalis covering 60% of your premium.
  • Attention to your work-life balance: you can work partially from home and structure your workday between 7:00 AM and 7:00 PM.
  • Numerous development opportunities, including access to training courses and unlimited access to GoodHabitz.
  • Engaging knowledge events to stay up-to-date in your field and beyond, such as lectures and meetings on various (scientific) topics, or participate in the internal information session "Naturalis Draait Door."
  • A laptop and phone allowance.
  • Additional perks such as discounts on software and hardware for personal use, collective health insurance, and a bicycle plan. You also receive discounts at our museum restaurant and free unlimited access to our award-winning museum for you and your family.
  • Fun events like a monthly social gathering, an annual BBQ, and a festive year-end party. Participation is optional.
  • A unique work environment in an impressive building where you will take pride in your work every day. You also contribute daily to the preservation of our planet.

About the team

Together with your 17 colleagues from the Collection Information department, you form the link between IT and our end users, such as researchers, heritage platforms, and the general public. We challenge each other, learn from one another, and have ample room to innovate. Our shared mission? To digitally manage and make socially accessible over 43 million natural history objects and all associated historical data, archives, and media. You will manage a portfolio unlike any other, from globally consulted databases to applications for the national infrastructure. The impact? Absolutely!
