Database Developer

As a Database Architect, you will design, implement, and maintain the database architecture that supports our organization’s information systems. You will play a crucial role in optimizing database performance, ensuring data integrity, and collaborating with cross-functional teams to meet business requirements. This role works with subject matter experts across the Office of the Chief Operations Officer and other Syracuse University departments, focusing on data-driven business processes, data interfaces, tactical and strategic analytics, data security, and the development of in-depth dashboards and reports. The position involves development (coding), analysis (troubleshooting), production support, and expertise in data warehousing, data integrations, and reporting applications.

Responsibilities

• Develop and implement database solutions that align with business requirements, ensuring efficiency, scalability, and optimal performance.
• Design database structures, tables, and relationships based on data modeling principles.
• Monitor and optimize database performance by fine-tuning queries, indexing, and configuration settings.
• Identify and resolve performance bottlenecks to ensure responsive and efficient database operations.
• Establish robust security measures to protect sensitive data from unauthorized access or potential breaches.
• Implement strategies for database scalability, considering factors such as data volume, user concurrency, and system performance.
• Conduct regular database maintenance tasks, including backups, updates, and patches, to ensure system stability.
• Troubleshoot and resolve database-related issues, providing timely and effective solutions.
• Collaborate with Auxiliary Services Units subject matter experts and external business partners, including Central ITS, to identify deficiencies in existing reporting and data processing capabilities.
• Identify potential technology improvements in systems, reporting, or data integrations to eliminate deficiencies.
• Participate in special projects, including new system implementations where data exports and imports create additional efficiencies.
• Develop documentation on existing and new data warehousing integrations.
• Create and maintain data models, documenting database structures, relationships, and dependencies.
• Develop and update comprehensive documentation for database architecture, processes, and best practices.
• Maintain and improve existing work instructions and procedures.
• Research and stay abreast of changes in data warehouse technology and collaborate with manager and colleagues on implementation.
• Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree and/or five to seven years of relevant work experience.
• Strong proficiency in Microsoft SQL Server and PowerShell and Python scripting, with hands-on experience building and maintaining ETL pipelines that integrate data across multiple systems including Oracle, Active Directory, and third-party APIs.
• Experience with version control systems, particularly Git, is a plus.
• Knowledge of data warehousing concepts, data modeling principles, and ETL best practices strongly desired.
• Ability to work effectively with both technical and non-technical stakeholders, communicate clearly at a level appropriate to the audience, and collaborate well both independently and as part of a team.
• Strong written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to independently manage and prioritize multiple projects with minimal oversight as the sole developer on the team.

• Work environment involves 80% indoor and 20% outdoor.
