About the role
The Database Administration Specialist 1 designs and implements processes for efficient data transfer (ETL/ELT) between systems within and outside the agency. This role involves developing dashboards, summaries, and visualizations using agency data and tools such as MS Power BI, as well as assisting with data model designs and physical implementations. The position supports the development and maintenance of OIC’s data warehouse using cloud solutions like Snowflake and Azure Data Factory.
At the full performance level, the candidate collaborates with systems administrators to set table access security, provides data governance, writes platform-specific code for data migrations and visualizations (Python, SQL, Java, DAX), and monitors cloud and on-premise databases using logs, load test results, and performance tools. A strong knowledge of RDBMS tools such as MS SQL Server and schemaless/NoSQL solutions is required.
Responsibilities
- Advise and consult with users on accessing databases and resolving data conflicts or inappropriate use.
- Resolve Tier I issues and promote system security by adhering to agency and state IT security policies.
- Provide performance tuning for query language statements and interpret query plans.
- Monitor databases using vendor-supplied and third-party utilities.
- Restore and monitor disaster recovery plans.
- Set security and validate updates through database connections.
- Collaborate with system administrators to set table access security.
- Assist with data model design and implement physical data models.
- Tune a single RDBMS system on a single platform.
- Write platform-specific code for data migrations and visualizations.
- Design and implement processes for efficient data transfer (ETL/ELT) and monitor these processes.
- Resolve data conflicts and inappropriate use of data.
- Provide ETL and data warehouse support.
Requirements
Minimum of 36 months of combined work experience in any of the following areas:
- Database administration providing Tier I support to information system users and/or IT staff.
- Assisting with data modeling and conducting performance tuning and configuration.
- 12 months of work experience in the primary technology specified by the agency (e.g., MS SQL Server, Snowflake, Azure Data Factory).
Alternate qualifications include:
- Completion of an associate core program in computer science or information systems, plus 18 months of combined work experience (including 12 months in the primary technology).
- Completion of an undergraduate core program in computer science or information systems, plus 12 months of combined work experience (including 12 months in the primary technology).
- Equivalent of the minimum class qualifications noted above.

Pay
$34.53 per hour (Step 1).
Schedule
Full-time, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM.
Work Location
William Green Building, Columbus, Ohio (Franklin County).
