About The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Lead Data Engineer to join our team remotely, preferably with proximity to the Chicago area. In this strategic role, you will be instrumental in shaping the future of our data, analytics, and artificial intelligence ecosystem. Your primary responsibilities will include designing and implementing a modern AWS and Databricks Lakehouse platform, partnering with cross-functional teams to turn data into actionable insights, and influencing the architecture of our enterprise analytics strategy. This is a high-impact position where you will lead the development of scalable, governed, and high-performance data solutions that empower the company’s decision-making processes. You will also mentor a small team of data engineers, ensuring best practices in data reliability, governance, and cost optimization while remaining hands-on in your technical contributions.
Qualifications
- 10+ years of IT experience with a focus on data engineering and ETL processes
- 4-6+ years of recent hands-on experience designing, building, and scaling data pipelines
- Strong expertise with Databricks (Spark, Delta Lake, Unity Catalog) and AWS (S3, IAM, networking)
- Proficiency in SQL, Python, data modeling, and distributed processing
- Experience working in an Agile analytics environment with collaborative stakeholder engagement
- Knowledge of modern data architecture concepts such as lakehouse, medallion architecture, CI/CD, and DevOps
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts into business solutions
- A passion for continuous learning and staying current with evolving data and analytics technologies
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and lead enterprise-grade data pipelines supporting batch and streaming data processing
- Manage the full ETL/ELT lifecycle from initial design to production support, ensuring data quality and reliability
- Establish and enforce data engineering standards, best practices, and architectural principles across the data ecosystem
- Translate complex business requirements into scalable, high-performance data solutions that meet organizational needs
- Mentor and guide a small team of data engineers, fostering a culture of excellence and continuous improvement
- Optimize data solutions for performance, governance, security, and cost-efficiency
- Collaborate with IT, analytics, and business teams to facilitate data-driven decision-making and strategic initiatives
