Data Center Structural Engineer

On-siteEngineeringFull-time

Location: Austin, TX, NYC, San Francisco, CA, Phoenix, AZ, or Seattle, WA preferred. Strong remote candidates will be considered. 25% travel required for all locations.

About the Role

Engineer the mechanical systems of the modular product: cooling, piping, and airflow from concept to released drawings. Own the liquid cooling loops, pumps, and heat rejection design the modular product's density depends on. Solve the integration problems where mechanical meets structure and electrical: routing, interfaces, and tolerances where the disciplines collide. Support the factory and field: mechanical RFIs answered same-day, fixes engineered into the next revision. Prototype and validate: mockups, fit checks, and first-article reviews you attend in person.

The Modular Team

Examples of key problems the team is working on:

  • Design the module that makes 6-month data centers possible. Fluidstack builds data centers in months, not years, and that speed lives in the modular product: a data center engineered as a manufactured unit, not a construction project.
  • Take designs from concept to the manufacturing line in weeks. Concept, released drawings, first article, and rate production on a compressed schedule, with the factory building from your work the same month you release it.
  • Engineer for the thousandth unit, not the first. On the way to 10 GW, every drawing, tolerance, and BOM decision has to survive rate manufacturing, so repeatability is designed in from the start.

Responsibilities

  • Design mechanical systems for modular infrastructure, including cooling, piping, and airflow from concept to released drawings.
  • Own liquid cooling loops, pumps, and heat rejection systems critical to the modular product's density.
  • Resolve integration challenges at the intersection of mechanical, structural, and electrical systems.
  • Support factory and field operations by addressing mechanical RFIs and implementing design fixes in subsequent revisions.
  • Participate in prototype builds, fit checks, and first-article reviews in person.
  • Collaborate directly with fabrication shops, manufacturers, installers, and production teams to resolve design issues.

Requirements

  • 7+ years designing mechanical systems for modular infrastructure, cooling systems, industrial equipment, or manufactured products.
  • Experience designing liquid cooling systems, pumps, heat exchangers, piping systems, cooling towers, or heat rejection systems.
  • Experience developing P&IDs, equipment layouts, piping drawings, and fabrication-ready mechanical packages.
  • Experience supporting prototype builds, first-article reviews, factory acceptance testing, or production launches.
  • Experience working directly with fabrication shops, manufacturers, installers, or production teams to resolve design issues.
  • Proficiency with SolidWorks, Inventor, Revit, Creo, or similar 3D mechanical design tools.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Direct-to-chip cooling, liquid cooling loops, CDUs, or AI/HPC cooling experience.
  • Modular data centers, equipment skids, or prefabricated infrastructure experience.
  • Advanced proficiency with SolidWorks, Inventor, Creo, or similar mechanical product design tools.
  • DFM/DFA and manufacturing-focused design experience.
  • First-article builds, FAT, production launches, or manufacturing engineering experience.

What We're Looking For

  • Hands-on experience engineering mechanical systems for complex physical products or modular construction.
  • Ability to create fabrication-ready drawings with minimal issues; quick resolution when fabricators do call.
  • Cross-disciplinary collaboration instead of siloed problem-solving.
  • Experience supporting production launches of your own designs.
  • Fast iteration with strong configuration control.

Bonus: Depth in liquid cooling, sheet metal and piping design, 3D CAD mastery (SolidWorks, Inventor, Revit), and DFM instincts.
