Data Center Hardware Technician - Lockport, NY (on-site)

The Yahoo Data Center Operations team includes a group of highly skilled and dedicated technicians and engineers. We work together to support a diverse IT infrastructure in one of the greenest, most advanced data centers in the world.

Responsibilities

• Maintain and repair rack-mount servers, storage units, and network equipment to maintain high uptime in a 24x7x365 data center environment.
• Work and prioritize incoming operational requests based on business urgency and platform impact.
• Diagnose and perform hardware, Layer 1–3 network, and system troubleshooting across multiple infrastructure disciplines.
• Leverage AI-assisted log analysis and diagnostic utilities to rapidly isolate hardware faults and accelerate mean time to repair (MTTR).
• Identify repetitive operational tasks and utilize AI coding/scripting tools (e.g., Claude Code/Codex) to automate daily maintenance workflows.
• Use in-house tools to deploy operating systems, update DNS records, configure network switches, and manage host provisioning.
• Partner closely with site engineering and platform infrastructure teams to execute complex change requests safely.
• Communicate directly with internal customer technical contacts to provide ticket status updates and incident resolution details.
• Maintain an adaptable, forward-looking mindset by evaluating emerging AI tools and workflows that improve operational speed and accuracy.
• Execute swing and overnight shift duties as required in a continuous support rotation.

Requirements

• 2-year degree in a technical field (Computer Science, Information Technology, Electronics) or equivalent practical experience.
• Knowledge of the UNIX/Linux operating environment, with the ability to navigate file systems, analyze permissions, and execute system administration commands.
• Basic understanding of TCP/IP network environments, including Layer 1–3 switching, routing protocols, and structured cabling.
• Basic proficiency with common scripting languages (BASH, Python, Perl, etc.) for system administration tasks.
• Familiarity with using AI tools or LLM prompts to assist in generating CLI commands, parsing system logs, or debugging basic diagnostic scripts.
• Physical ability to lift hardware components, climb ladders, and perform physical work in elevated data center temperature environments.
• Ability to work on-site at the Lockport, NY facility and participate in 24x7x365 shift rotations as scheduled.

Preferred Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related technical field.
• Hands-on experience managing and testing fiber physical plant infrastructure.
• Demonstrated experience developing custom BASH or Python automation scripts to manage infrastructure at scale.
• Experience utilizing AI-driven monitoring or anomaly detection tools in a production data center environment.
• Strong commitment to continuous learning, operational excellence, and taking ownership of technical deliverables.

Pay

The compensation for this position ranges from $59,250.00 to $123,125.00 per year and will vary depending on factors such as your location, skills, and experience.

Schedule

This role requires participation in 24x7x365 shift rotations, including swing and overnight shifts, at the Lockport, NY facility.
