Data Analyst II

Working under limited supervision, the Data Analyst II provides strategic, tactical, and operational support and analytics to patrol, investigations, special operations, and command staff. Handles time-sensitive requests from city officials, other law enforcement agencies, and the public via GRAMA requests.

Responsibilities

• Identify emergent crime patterns and series, analyze criminal activity, and contribute to intervention efforts.
• Communicate critical intelligence to officers and complete complex analyses joining datasets from disparate sources.
• Produce reports, dashboards, and maps that meet the needs of internal and external stakeholders.
• Work with data in multiple systems, develop appropriate datasets, apply analytical best practices, and ensure accuracy.
• Design solutions for partners by understanding the questions being asked and help stakeholders understand key takeaways.
• Serve as primary contact and subject matter expert for patrol divisions and investigations, providing on-demand support based on evolving crime patterns and city leaders' needs.
• Participate in the investigative process through analytical examination of data, intelligence, and evidence to identify offenders and link cases.
• Perform comprehensive research of persons, places, and vehicles in criminal cases.
• Conduct open-source research and data analysis of social media for potential criminal activity or community threats.
• Present clear and concise findings to stakeholders and provide recommendations, encouraging data-driven approaches.
• Evaluate and anticipate reporting needs of the department and consistently deliver work products on time.
• Demonstrate technical expertise by selecting the best data tools for specific requests.
• Troubleshoot data challenges and reconcile discrepancies with creative problem-solving.
• Collaborate with IT partners and analyst colleagues across the city to develop optimized data solutions.
• Develop trust and partnerships within the department to deliver value-added reporting and intelligence aligned with strategic objectives.
• Handle highly sensitive information with integrity and professionalism.
• Perform additional duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a bachelor’s degree in Social Sciences, Data/Computer Science, Statistics/Mathematics, Criminology/Criminal Justice, or a closely related field.
• Three years of professional experience in analytics, including gathering data, interpreting results, identifying trends and patterns, creating visualizations, and explaining takeaways.
• Directly related work experience may substitute for education on a year-for-year basis.
• A master’s degree in a related field may substitute for up to two years of professional experience.
• Advanced knowledge of visualization software such as ArcGIS, Tableau, and Power BI, and/or coding languages such as SQL, Python, or R.

Qualifications

• In-depth knowledge of statistics, quantitative analysis, and storytelling with data.
• Professional experience using analytical software, databases, and systems such as ArcGIS, Tableau, Power BI, SQL, Python, or R.
• Master’s degree in GIS, Data/Computer Science, Statistics/Mathematics, Criminology/Criminal Justice, or a related field (desired).
• Professional certifications including International Association of Crime Analysts (IACA) or technical certifications in programming (e.g., SQL, Python) (desired).

Schedule

• May work four days a week, ten hours per day or five days a week, eight hours per day.
• May require shift work, including holidays and weekends.
• On occasion, may be required to respond outside normal working hours to meet department needs.

Pay

$60,941 - $105,281

Working Conditions

• Generally comfortable working conditions requiring light physical effort.
• Intermittent sitting, standing, and walking, with frequent use of a computer, telephone, and other standard office equipment.
