About the role
The Dangerous Goods Administrator reviews and approves shipping bill of lading documents, A.K.A. “shipping papers” involving the transportation of hazardous materials (hazmat) and dangerous goods for Matson Navigation Company, Inc., its subsidiaries. Identifies errors and omissions on shipping papers submitted by customers and communicate with those customers to correct shipping paper discrepancies. Works closely with the DG Team Manager and Specialists on complex and/or unique hazmat and dangerous goods shipping papers to ensure regulatory compliance and appropriate risk mitigation as determined by Matson management. Acts as a point of contact regarding the transportation of hazardous materials for all Matson vessels.
Responsibilities
- Reviews and approves shipping bill of lading documents, A.K.A. “shipping papers” involving the transportation of hazardous materials (hazmat) and dangerous goods for Matson Navigation Company, Inc., its subsidiaries.
- Identifies errors and omissions on shipping papers submitted by customers and communicate with those customers to correct shipping paper discrepancies.
- Works closely with the DG Team Manager and Specialists on complex and/or unique hazmat and dangerous goods shipping papers to ensure regulatory compliance and appropriate risk mitigation as determined by Matson management.
- Acts as a point of contact regarding the transportation of hazardous materials for all Matson vessels.
- Provide input and feedback to assist Matson Customer Service Representatives (CSR) with hazardous material/ dangerous goods cargo related questions and issues.
- Support team management of the HAZMAT program, one of the main conduits of hazardous information into Matson systems and operations.
- Support the management of the Hazcaptain and HAZMAT computer programs.
- Upload Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC) reports into the Lexus Nexus Bridger System for Dangerous Goods Manager’s review. This includes Matson Navigation, Company customers as well as all vendors and customers for all Matson companies.
- Complete daily review of Matson Navigation Company customer OFAC runs.
- Review documentation provided by Matson Customer Service to the DG Team for review to determine if the shipper is part of Matson’s Trusted Hazardous Shipper Program.
- Review and provide feedback for hazardous goods booking requests for cargo, identifying segregation conflicts utilizing the HazCaptain system as well as ensuring compliance with shipping paper requirements outlined in 49 Code of Federal Regulations and the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.
- Note discrepancies between the HazCaptain system and Hazardous Materials Tables and elevate for further action.
- Provide DG Specialists with validated documentation for final review.
- Aid in the development, implementation, and maintenance of hazardous materials information guides for Matson employees and customers, including website development, to ensure regulatory compliance.
- Complete hazardous data reviews of shipping papers for shippers in the Trusted Hazardous Shipper Program to ensure continued compliance.
- Track and assist in maintaining a log of errors found during shipping paper review to improve hazardous materials training programs and support the Trusted Hazardous Shipper Program.
Qualifications
- Basic knowledge and experience with dangerous goods documentation.
- One to two years of related data entry experience.
- Basic knowledge and experience in the transportation industry.
