We are seeking skilled percussionists for modern/contemporary dance technique classes and skilled pianists for ballet and/or modern dance technique classes. Previous experience is strongly preferred but not required. Please indicate in your cover letter which style(s) you are applying for (ballet or modern/contemporary dance, or both) and your instrument(s).
Schedule
- Potential times for ballet accompanying: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 9:00–10:30 AM
- Potential times for modern/contemporary accompanying: Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, 11:00 AM–12:30 PM
- Occasional Wednesday or afternoon classes may be available
- Some positions may extend through the spring semester; others may be for subbing only
Responsibilities
Modern/Contemporary Dance Technique Class Accompanist
- Improvise music to match tempo, meter, musicality, and length of dance exercises or combinations given by the instructor
- Play alone or occasionally with another musician
- Provide music based on 20th and 21st century concert dance techniques and styles (e.g., Graham, Horton, Limón)
- Use a personalized style that complements the dance movement, often through spontaneous improvisation
- Communicate effectively with the teacher, adjusting tempo or music choices as requested
- Maintain consistent and precise tempos, adapting to changes as needed
- Play odd meters or change meter mid-exercise when required
- Provide textural, non-rhythmic, or timbral-focused sounds when needed
Ballet Technique Class Accompanist
- Play repertoire of your choosing or improvise (primarily in classical styles, but other styles may be included) to match ballet exercises
- Edit repertoire as needed to fit the length and phrasing of exercises
- Provide a clear sense of beat, pulse, and timing for dancers
- Use rubato appropriately in certain exercises
- Communicate effectively with the teacher, adjusting tempo or music choices as requested
Requirements
Modern/Contemporary Dance Technique Class Accompanist
- Advanced technique and strong musicality on piano or percussion
- Outstanding improvisational skills
- Ability to maintain consistent tempos and adapt to changes
- Ability to play a range of tempos, time signatures, and rhythmic/stylistic qualities
- Ability to observe and note changes in meter or phrasing before playing
Ballet Technique Class Accompanist
- Advanced classical piano technique
- Excellent sight-reading ability and quick learning of intermediate to advanced music
- Strong improvisational skills in classical and other styles
- Familiarity with ballet class structure to choose or improvise appropriate music quickly
- Ability to maintain a clear sense of beat and consistent tempo
Qualifications
- Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in music, preferably in piano or percussion performance
- Previous experience playing for ballet and/or modern dance classes is strongly preferred
Studio Environment and Protocols
- Most studios are equipped with acoustic pianos (primarily Yamaha U1s, with one concert grand); some smaller studios have digital pianos
- Accompanists generally do not speak during class except to ask for clarification or when approached by the teacher
- Water is allowed in class, but containers should not be placed on pianos
Pay
The standard hourly rate for this role is $40.00 per hour.
