About the role

The Illinois Department of Public Health is seeking a highly motivated individual to perform evaluation of the design, construction and installation of dairy equipment. The position involves serving as the Department's expert on dairy equipment, studying and approving new equipment, conducting IMS ratings, evaluating labels for new dairy plants and products, developing and conducting dairy equipment inspection training, reviewing equipment blueprints and specifications, participating in writing sanitary standards, attending continuing education and professional development training, and performing other duties as required.

Responsibilities

  • Serves as the Department's expert on dairy equipment.
  • Studies and approves new equipment by meeting with equipment manufacturer or designer to physically examine new equipment designs which have not been approved by the Food, Dairies and Devices Section.
  • Conducts Interstate Milk Shipment (IMS) ratings.
  • Evaluates labels for new dairy plants and products to be manufactured in that plant.
  • Develops and conducts dairy equipment inspection training of regional and field Sanitarians.
  • Reviews equipment blueprints and specifications submitted by manufacturers or field Sanitarians for modification of existing equipment installations for approved construction methods.
  • Participates in writing sanitary standards in accordance with "3A Sanitary Standards Inc.", an organization that sets and approves construction standards for the manufacturing of processing equipment.
  • Attends continuing education and professional development training.
  • Performs other duties as required or assigned, which are reasonably within the scope of the duties enumerated above.

Requirements

Requires knowledge, skill, and mental development equivalent to completion of four (4) years of college. Requires prior experience equivalent to three (3) years of progressively responsible administrative experience in the fields of environmental or physical sciences.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 30 semester hours in the physical and/or biological sciences.
  • Three (3) years of experience related to environmental health investigation and administration of environmental public health programs.
  • Three (3) years of experience applying knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental health and public health laws and regulations, especially pertaining to dairy programs.
  • Three (3) years of experience conducting environmental health regulatory assessments and inspections at regulated entities.
  • Three (3) years of experience writing inspection reports and communications to the public and regulated entities.
  • Three (3) years of experience applying knowledge of general environmental health sanitation principles and practices.
  • Three (3) years of experience in environmental field sampling equipment and testing techniques.

Skills

  • Knowledge of local, state, and federal environmental health and public health laws and regulations, especially pertaining to dairy programs.
  • Experience conducting environmental health regulatory assessments and inspections at regulated entities.
  • Experience writing inspection reports and communications to the public and regulated entities.
  • Experience applying knowledge of general environmental health sanitation principles and practices.
  • Experience in environmental field sampling equipment and testing techniques.

Pay

Anticipated Starting Salary (Effective 07/01/26): $8,571 MONTHLY
Full Range: $8,571 - $12,651 MONTHLY

Schedule

Monday - Friday 8:30AM - 5:00PM (1 hour lunch)

Conditions of Employment

  • Requires the ability to travel in the performance of duties.
  • Requires appropriate, valid driver’s license.
  • Requires physical abilities to conduct inspections, including production lines and large plants and operations.
  • Certain provisions of the revolving door restrictions contained in 5 ILCS 430/5-45 apply to this position.
