About the role
Provides direct leadership to the Dairy, Service Deli, and Seafood (DSSD) department crew. Responsibilities include planning and assigning work, conducting performance evaluations, coaching, training, and mentoring team members to enthusiastically demonstrate, educate, and sell department products.
Responsibilities
- Lead, train, and mentor DSSD department crew members; conduct performance evaluations, coaching sessions, and administer discipline when needed.
- Manage the training process for all new DSSD crew members through their probationary period, including onboarding activities and department-specific training videos on the in-house LMS.
- Complete and submit documentation to Human Resources, including Fresh Sheets and New Hire Training Guides.
- Write and place orders for all products and supplies; check in orders upon receipt, date, stock, and organize all coolers.
- Prepare DSSD products for sale by stocking and facing products following established department and company policies.
- Write daily plans and weekly work schedules that anticipate business needs.
- Ensure execution of all DSSD programs and corporate promotions at the store level by working directly with the DSSD Sales Manager on product selection and mix.
- Control and maintain inventory following FIFO principles to achieve consistent margin; rotate merchandise and maintain displays to meet freshness guarantees.
- Coordinate validation, item authorization, sign making, and all DSSD department-related POS maintenance.
- Maintain accurate records for damaged or spoiled merchandise in accordance with company policies.
- Comply with all food and workplace safety rules and regulations; ensure safety, cleanliness, and sanitation of work areas and equipment.
- Acquire product knowledge across all departments to respond to guest questions and provide informative details about merchandise.
- Stay updated on weekly specials, coupons, and other company promotions to create an environment that delights guests.
- Foster a team-oriented work environment that encourages collaboration and cooperation.
- Work a flexible schedule, including weekends, holidays, and shifts, as the store is open seven days a week.
Requirements
- 2 years of department management experience or equivalent education/experience.
- Knowledge of fundamental management concepts, practices, and procedures related to food service, merchandising, and retail operations.
- Expert knowledge of all products carried in the department, including willingness to taste and evaluate DSSD products.
- Ability to follow instructions and procedures for proper handling of hand tools and department equipment.
- Strong work ethic with effective time management skills.
- Ability to comprehend, interpret, and analyze instructions, correspondence, government regulations, financial reports, legal documents, and various operational reports (e.g., packing lists, manifests, pick sheets, inventory count sheets).
- Proven success in mentoring, motivating, and leading a team.
- Math skills necessary for tasks such as calculating gross margins, markup, percentages, analyzing variance, budgeting labor and sales, completing sales transactions, and calculating discounts.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to interact professionally and courteously with guests, crew members, store management, corporate sales managers, and leadership, including answering telephone calls and using the in-store intercom system.
- Ability to work with cleaning chemicals and detergents without allergic reaction.
- Ability to work around food ingredients, produce, and spices without allergic reaction.
- Must be at least 18 years of age due to equipment use and work environment.
- Current State Food Handler’s Permit must be maintained.
Work Environment
- Work primarily on the sales floor and in freezer and refrigerated areas.
- Required to join a labor union.
Physical Activity
- Routine lifting of 25–50 lbs.
- Standing, walking, bending, twisting, reaching, fingering, pushing, pulling, and sitting.
Tools and Equipment
- Box knife, computer, printer, telephone, order gun, shopping cart, garbage compactor, bailer, forklift (with certification), pallet jack, flatbed, hand truck, ladder, calculator, mop, broom, floor squeegee.
- Cleaning supplies: hand soap, hand sanitizer, glass and multi-surface cleaner, floor cleaner.
Pay
The pay range is $25.25 to $26.25 per hour. Starting rates vary based on location, experience, qualifications, and terms of any applicable collective bargaining agreement.
