Cytopathology Section Overview
Under general supervision of the Histology/Cytology Manager, along with Wellstar Laboratory Medical Directors and diagnostic expertise of the pathologist group, this position directly supervises all functions of the Cytology Section. Responsibilities include planning, coordinating, staffing, and technical oversight.
Core Responsibilities
- Ensure proper labeling and accessioning of specimens and patients
- Accurately enter patient data and specimen type into the Laboratory computer system
- Process each specimen maintaining patient identification throughout the preparation process
- Perform cytology prep under the guidance of the Cytotechnologist
- Verify and document quality control and patient slides
- Enter sendout test charges and consults in the Misys and CoPath computer systems
- Coordinate staffing, vacations, and work duties to maintain a steady workflow
- Perform NON-GYN screening duties, including FNA procedures and GYN-Automated assisted PAP screening
- Update and follow regulatory guidelines set by OSHA, CLIA, CAP, JCAHO, etc.
- Perform embedding, microtomy, special staining, and IHC techniques as needed
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree required
- Cytotechnologist - ASCP certification preferred
- Minimum 4 years job-related experience required
- Minimum 1 year Cytologist experience required
