About the role

The Cytotechnologist / Cytotech is responsible for preparation and storage of all specimens and necessary documentation. Prepares stains and slides for reading by Cytotechnologist or review by the Pathologist.

Responsibilities

  • Stains, mounts, and studies cells of human body to detect evidence of cancer, hormonal abnormalities and other pathological conditions, following established standards and practices.
  • Prepares microscopic slides from specimens of blood, scrapings, or other bodily exudates and fixes stains and slide to preserve specimen and enhance visibility of cells under microscope.
  • Examines cell samples to detect abnormal hormone conditions.
  • Examines cell samples to detect abnormalities in the color, shape, or size of cellular components and patterns.
  • Evaluates cells for the presence of cancer, precancerous changes, or infections.
  • Prepares and analyzes samples, such as Papanicolaou (PAP) smear body fluids and fine needle aspirations (FNAs) to detect abnormal conditions.
  • Provides patient clinical data or microscopic findings to assist pathologists in the preparation of pathology reports.
  • Assists Pathologists or other physicians to collect cell samples such as by fine needle aspiration (FNA) biopsies.
  • Performs quality assurance in the laboratory, including maintenance of systems in accordance with the requirements of the College of American Pathologists and preparation for site visits.
  • Prepares slides and reports in a timely fashion, ensuring quality control measures are met.
  • Maintains procedures and records to meet all regulatory standards.
  • Performs other duties as necessary for efficient operation of the department.
  • Actively seeks ways to control costs without compromising patient safety, quality of care, or the services delivered.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of the occurrence reporting system and uses it to report potential patient safety issues.
  • Follows established guidelines for reporting significant medical errors or unanticipated outcomes in patient care that result in patient harm.
  • Attends in-service presentations and completes all mandatory education requirements.
  • Uses Performance Improvement Plan to improve patient safety.
  • Ensures regular, punctual, and dependable attendance.
  • Prepares and maintains reagents and equipment.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree required
  • C.T. (ASCP) certification preferred
  • 1 to 3 years of experience preferred
