Cytology Lab Assistant (Laboratory Tech I)

Job Summary

This full-time University of Colorado Staff Cytology Laboratory Assistant position in a busy clinical laboratory setting provides testing of gynecologic samples, body fluids, Fine Needle Aspirates and biopsies. This position is responsible for accessioning patient samples, processing samples using various technical protocols, routine instrument maintenance, and some clerical duties.

Key Responsibilities

• Receiving, accessioning and labeling of gynecologic and non-gynecologic specimens using Laboratory Information System
• Applying approved cytopreparation methods to process cytology specimens and sending out selected samples for ancillary testing
• Operating and troubleshooting laboratory instruments and equipment and performing routine preventive maintenance
• Utilizing and maintaining cytology stains, reagents and chemicals, including their preparation, storage, and correct disposal
• Maintaining, organizing stock inventory, and requesting laboratory supplies
• Providing support with various administrative tasks and handling phone inquiries
• Reporting patient safety issues and specimen deficiencies
• Participating in orientation of cytology residents and medical students in the subject of cytopreparation

Work Location

Onsite – this role is expected to work onsite.

Qualifications

• Minimum Qualifications: Two years of laboratory experience in clinical setting
• Preferred Qualifications: An Associate’s degree or higher in biology, natural sciences, or a related field
• Experience working with students, staff and faculty in a teaching hospital environment

• Eligible for overtime compensation, depending on the level
