CYP Food Service Worker - SAC & Youth

About the role

The Child and Youth Program (CYP) Food Service Worker performs food preparation and service tasks for the CYP, primarily in a Child Development Center (CDC) and may assist with the School Age Care (SAC) Program at the Fort Story SAC & Youth Center.

Responsibilities

  • Assist in food preparation: peeling potatoes; cutting, sorting and washing vegetables and fruits; assembling sandwiches; measuring and weighing ingredients.
  • Stock food service carts with utensils, plates, bowls, food and beverages for family style dining in classrooms or activity areas.
  • Wrap, arrange, and/or package items for serving to children and youth; transport food from kitchen to classrooms or activity areas.
  • Return carts, dishes, and leftovers to the kitchen; dispose of food waste and trash.
  • Pre-rinse and wash pots, pans, dishes, glasses and silverware in a mechanical dishwasher or manually per sanitation regulations.
  • Clean serving carts, food preparation areas, cupboards, drawers, and dishwashing areas; set up and operate a mechanical dishwasher.
  • Perform preventative maintenance on dishwasher components (inspection doors, strainer pans, screens, spray arms).
  • Scrape, soak, scour, and scrub large cooking utensils such as mixing bowls and pots.
  • Perform heavy-duty cleaning: ceilings, exhaust hoods, under and behind equipment, floors and walls with powered equipment, walk-in refrigerators and freezers, and sanitize garbage room.
  • Maintain work area in a clean and orderly manner in accordance with NAVMED P5010 and local policies.
  • Operate, break down, and clean all assigned electrical food preparation equipment; store sanitized dishes and silverware.
  • Label and date items in refrigerators and freezers; store leftovers per sanitation and health standards.
  • Store canned, boxed, and frozen items; unload food and supplies from delivery trucks.
  • Move heavy garbage cans when collecting and transferring trash from work area to disposal area.
  • Comply with security, fire and sanitation rules, policies, and regulations.
  • Ensure compliance with USDA Child and Adult Care Food Program (CACFP) standards, policies, and regulations.
  • Serve as a mandatory reporter to Family Advocacy and Child Protective Services for suspected child abuse or neglect.

Requirements

  • Satisfactorily complete background checks for child care positions: fingerprint checks, Tier 1 with Child Care check, and State Criminal History Repository (SCHR) check.
  • Successfully pass E-Verify employment verification; resolve any discrepancies as a condition of employment.
  • Pass a pre-employment physical; provide evidence of immunization; be free of communicable diseases; obtain appropriate immunizations.
  • Ability to sustain considerable walking, standing, bending, stooping, and lifting up to 40 pounds.
  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Successfully obtain and maintain appropriate security clearance as needed.
  • Ability to complete required training certificates and maintain certifications or credentials required by Federal, State, and/or national accreditation institutions used as part of DoD’s Child and Youth Programs.

Qualifications

  • Knowledge of food handling techniques, personal hygiene standards, and safe work procedures.
  • Knowledge of techniques for measuring ingredients and basic recipe construction.
  • Working knowledge of diet principles and sanitation standards to prevent contamination.
  • Skill to perform multi-step tasks and troubleshoot production problems; evaluate final food products and initiate corrective action.
  • Ability to develop standardized recipes for quantity cooking; expand and modify recipes based on equipment capacity and serving adjustments.
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both orally and in writing, with strong interpersonal skills.
  • High school diploma or equivalent; submit a copy of diploma, GED, or college transcripts showing degree awarded.
