Description
The Cybersecurity Intern supports the Information Security team by assisting with cybersecurity monitoring, compliance activities, and technical support initiatives across the institution. Under the guidance of the cybersecurity Analyst and senior IT staff, the intern will gain hands-on experience in cybersecurity operations, vulnerability management, system monitoring, and IT security awareness efforts. This internship is designed to provide real-world exposure to enterprise cybersecurity practices while supporting the institution's mission of protecting proprietary, personal, and privileged electronic data.
Characteristic Job Tasks And Responsibilities
- Assist in monitoring cybersecurity tools used to detect attacks and vulnerabilities
- Support vulnerability scanning and help document findings under supervision
- Review system logs, IDS alerts, and security reports to identify potential issues
- Aid in remediation efforts and implementation of security countermeasures
- Support the IT Security Awareness Program by helping develop documentation, communications, or training materials
- Help analyze and isolate basic security or technical issues and escalate as needed
- Absorb network availability and security for authorized users
- Support testing of system updates, patches, and security releases to minimize user impact
- Create or update technical documentation for systems, applications, and security processes
- Provide Tier 1 assistance for Help Desk issues and escalate incidents appropriately
- Document actions taken and assist with follow-up on unresolved issues
- Participate in special cybersecurity or IT-related projects as assigned
- Collaborate with IT teams on instructional technology and infrastructure projects
- Absorb inventory, configuration, and basic maintenance of PCs and network equipment
- Perform other duties as assigned to support efficient IT operations
Minimum Requirements
- Basic understanding of cybersecurity concepts and best practices
- Familiarity with Windows operating systems and Active Directory fundamentals
- Introductory knowledge of networking concepts (IP addressing, VLANs, TCP/IP)
- Willingness to learn enterprise security tools and software
- Strong attention to detail and organizational skills
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally with faculty, staff, and peers
- Ability to follow documented procedures and escalate issues appropriately
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
- Ability to work collaboratively in a team environment
- Time management skills and ability to balance multiple tasks
Minimum Qualifications
- Currently enrolled in an Associate's or Bachelor's degree program in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, Computer Science, or a related field
- Coursework or basic experience in networking fundamentals, cybersecurity principles, Windows operating systems
- Interest in pursuing a career in cybersecurity or IT
- (Preferred but not required): Familiarity with firewalls, antivirus software, or vulnerability scanning tools
- Experience with help desk or technical support environments
