CVE Inspector I
Employment Type: Executive Branch, Full Time, Eligible for Overtime Pay
Schedule: 40 hours per week
About the Role
The CVE Inspector I inspects commercial vehicles to determine compliance with Federal Motor Carrier Safety Regulations, size and weight requirements, and other state regulations for commercial vehicles traveling in Kentucky. This position is assigned to one of 13 facilities across the Commonwealth and serves Scott County. The role is critical to Kentucky State Police’s mission of enhancing highway safety.
Responsibilities
- Learn statutes, regulations, policies, and procedures related to commercial vehicle enforcement.
- Under supervision, inspect drivers and vehicles for compliance with federal and state laws, including physically inspecting vehicles for safety defects, checking cargo securement, and issuing citations when appropriate.
- Inspect hazardous materials cargo, identify violations, and issue citations when necessary.
- Check for size and weight compliance; issue citations when appropriate.
- Complete all required paperwork and communicate issues through the chain of command.
- Maintain uniform and equipment in accordance with policy.
Requirements
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Must be 21 years of age or older.
- Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
- Must successfully pass an extensive background investigation prior to employment.
- Within 12 months of employment, must pass Part A and Part B of the North American Standard Inspections test as required by the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.
- Must maintain any required licensure, certification, or credentials for the duration of employment.
Substitution: One year of experience in the maintenance or repair of automotive or powered equipment may substitute for the required education.

Pay
Salary: $36,500.00 annually (Pay Grade 10)
Probationary Period
This position has an initial and promotional probationary period of 12 months.
