CVB Train Service Personnel III

About the role

The Train Service Personnel III operates steam and/or diesel train locomotives and passenger cars for Grapevine Vintage Railroad (GVRR) in capacities of conductor, fireman, and engineer.

Responsibilities

• Maintain proficiency in all roles including brakeman, conductor, fireman, and engineer.
• Ensure punctual departures and arrivals by coordinating with other crew members.
• Perform preventive maintenance inspections on locomotives, passenger coaches, and related equipment.
• Complete GVRR Federal Railroad Administration log reports and forms promptly.
• Diagnose and repair locomotive and train systems, including brakes, electrical, cooling, fuel, exhaust, power train, suspension, and HVAC systems.
• Assist in roundhouse operations, including tool, supply, and equipment maintenance.
• Oversee check rides and hands-on training for new and volunteer staff.
• Participate in charters, special events, and other duties as assigned.
• Maintain a safe and pleasant environment for employees and passengers.
• Maintain equipment, facilities, and grounds in a secure, clean, and well-maintained condition.
• Ensure cost-effective repairs and maintenance of all equipment, grounds, and facilities.
• Interact professionally and respectfully with the public, coworkers, and others.

Requirements

• High School Diploma or GED.
• Certified as a Locomotive Engineer (preferred).
• Knowledge of safety standards for passenger trains and related equipment.
• Knowledge of federal railroad inspection standards.
• Knowledge of methods and procedures for servicing and repairing steam, gasoline, and diesel equipment.
• Ability to identify abnormal readings and diagnose mechanical issues.
• Ability to diagnose and repair railroad equipment.
• Ability to determine the functional interrelationship of parts within a mechanical system.
• Ability to interpret technical reference manuals.
• Proficiency in using a variety of equipment, including forklifts, locomotives, passenger coaches, railroad switches, turntables, two-way radios, and hand and power tools.
• Pass a Federal/National criminal background check.
• Valid Texas driver's license with an acceptable driving record.
• Pass a National Highway Traffic Safety Administration driver’s license check.
• Pass a pre-employment basic physical, FRA 5 panel drug screen, and functional assessment screening (Level 1).
• Pass a pre-employment Department of Transportation Railroad (FRA) vision (Ishihara and Titmus) and audio screening.
• Pass periodic random drug and alcohol tests.
• Pass Department of Transportation Railroad (FRA) vision and audio screenings every three years.
