Cutter/Draper - Costume Shop
About the role
The Costume Shop's Cutter/Draper assists in the day-to-day operations of the Theatre Arts costume shop and supervises all activities associated with the shop in consultation with the Costume Shop Manager.
Responsibilities
- Maintain safe operation of all tools in the Helfaer Theatre costume shop.
- Aid in regular maintenance and upkeep of shop machinery and tools.
- Enforce safety rules and supervise students when operating costume shop tools and equipment to ensure an accident-free environment.
- Manage construction of all costuming elements in consultation with the Theatre Arts Costume Shop Manager.
- Pattern, drape, and construct costumes as needed in consultation with the Theatre Arts Costume Shop Manager.
- Aid in the supervision of student workers in the construction of costume elements.
- Aid in the supervision of student workers in the management of fabric and costume storage facilities.
- Supervise the daily operation of the theatre costume shop including managing the inventory of tools through proper check-in procedures as well as end-of-session clean-up procedures.
- Afford costume needs of theatre arts productions in a timely manner.
- Aid with outside professional theatre companies, high schools, and colleges with costume rentals. Keep track of costume inventory being checked in and out. Assist with restocking as needed.
Requirements
- A Bachelor’s degree in Theatre with an emphasis in Technical Theatre.
- At least two years practical work experience in the preparation and construction of theatre costumes.
- Supervisory skills.
- Ability to operate a sewing machine and perform basic sewing, patterning, draping, and clothing construction.
- Strong oral communications skills, as well as interpersonal skills.
- The ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds.
- Visual acuity.
- The ability to lift and transport materials weighing up to 40 pounds on an occasional basis.
- Requires prolonged standing, frequent bending or stooping.
Qualifications
A Bachelor's degree in Theatre with an emphasis in Technical Theatre, at least two years practical work experience in the preparation and construction of theatre costumes, supervisory skills, ability to operate a sewing machine and perform basic sewing, patterning, draping and clothing construction, strong oral communications skills, as well as interpersonal skills, the ability to develop knowledge of, respect for, and skills to engage with those of other cultures or backgrounds, visual acuity, the ability to lift and transport materials weighing up to 40 pounds on an occasional basis, requires prolonged standing, frequent bending or stooping.
