New Recruitments and Retention Incentives
U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) offers incentives for new hires and existing employees to encourage retention. Newly appointed CBPOs will be offered up to a $15,000 incentive per year, for a three-year service contract, in Arizona, California, Hawaii, and Maine. Additionally, a four-year service contract incentive is available in California, Florida, and North Dakota.

Salary
The typical base salary for newly appointed CBPOs varies by location and grade level. GS-9 positions range from $63,431 to $127,464 per year, with locality pay varying by duty location. Officers are eligible for up to $45,000 in overtime pay in addition to their starting salary.
Qualifications
- Experience: At least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade level that includes detaining suspected violators, enforcing laws, utilizing intelligence techniques, conducting interviews, and making rapid, accurate judgments and decisions.
- Education: A minimum of a bachelor's degree, or two or more years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to such a degree, or an LL.B. or J.D. from an accredited college or university.
- Substitution: Successfully completed graduate-level education can substitute for experience.
- Other Requirements: Must be a U.S. citizen with at least three years of primary U.S. residency, and be referred for selection to the CBPO position before turning 40 years old.
