About the Role

Under the supervision of the principal or assigned administrator and the direction of the Plant Manager and/or Lead Custodian, this service-level position cleans, disinfects, maintains, and makes minor repairs to district facilities to provide a safe, clean, and healthy environment for students, staff, and the community. The Custodian must work cooperatively and productively with a diverse population of internal and external customers.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans, dusts, and disinfects assigned District facilities including, but not limited to, restrooms, indoor and outdoor entry areas, classrooms, offices, stairways, floors, laboratories, and other assigned areas.
  • Maintains indoor and outdoor areas by removing trash and waste, cleaning trash receptacles, and replacing liners.
  • Maintains cleanliness of flooring by sweeping, mopping, spot cleaning hard floors and baseboards, and vacuuming and spot cleaning carpeted surfaces.
  • Adheres to an assigned maintenance schedule for major cleaning projects, including carpet cleaning, floor stripping, and refinishing.
  • Monitors facilities for pest and rodent infestations; takes action for minor infestations or informs Lead Custodian and/or Plant Manager about major infestations.
  • Inspects equipment and facilities regularly for function and required servicing; makes minor repairs (e.g., light bulb or lamp replacement, door handle, light switch, or plate repair, soap dispenser replacement) and arranges for complex repairs with Plant Manager or Lead Custodian.
  • Participates in the set-up and take-down of seating and equipment for events, including theater, athletic fields, multi-purpose rooms, and/or gymnasium use, such as rearranging, moving, and setting up furniture and special equipment (barriers, benches, bleachers, floor mats, etc.).
  • Maintains a secure environment by securing internal and external entry and exit doors, ensuring windows and lights are locked and off, monitoring and responding to fire alarms, and inspecting lifts as assigned.
  • Adheres to required safety protocols, including proper labeling of secondary containers for cleaning products, following Safety Data Sheets (SDS), and using personal protective equipment.
  • Maintains appropriate stocking of custodial supplies, replenishes soap, towel, and toilet paper dispensers in restrooms, and informs Plant Manager and/or Lead Custodian about supply shortages.
  • Informs Lead, Plant Manager, and/or assigned administrator about work activities and unanticipated occurrences.
  • Performs other duties as assigned that support the objectives of the position.

Requirements

  • Basic knowledge of methods, materials, tools, and equipment used in custodial care and routine facilities maintenance.
  • Basic knowledge of work hazards, safety techniques, lifting procedures, and handling of materials, including waste and bloodborne pathogens.
  • Some knowledge of chemical reactions and proper safety precautions for use.
  • Basic knowledge of building and plumbing repairs.
  • Sufficient reading and writing ability to read work instructions and document work activity on standardized forms.
  • Sufficient human relations skills to exercise courtesy when dealing with others.

Abilities

  • Perform all essential duties of the position with general supervision.
  • Follow all safety precautions and procedures (e.g., safety data sheets, personal protective equipment).
  • Perform routine maintenance tasks and determine when to refer more complex maintenance requirements to a supervisor.
  • Operate and maintain tools and equipment safely.
  • Follow oral and written directions, including reading Safety Data Sheets (SDS) and following instructions for use and disposal of materials, cleaning chemicals, and supplies.
  • Work independently and collaboratively.
  • Learn and apply District policies and procedures within a reasonable period of time.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability, attention to detail, and a customer service orientation.
  • May require the ability to perform work assignments on varying shifts.

Physical Abilities

  • Function effectively indoors and outdoors in work of primarily an active nature.
  • Near visual acuity to write, read directions and product labels, and observe environmental conditions.
  • Perform duties using a variety of cleaning solutions, chemicals, products, and equipment.
  • Sufficient hearing and speech for ordinary communication, to hear sound prompts from equipment, and to determine if equipment is functioning properly.
  • Manual and finger dexterity to write, clean, and make minor repairs.
  • Lift (from overhead, waist, and floor levels, max. 50 lbs.), carry (max. 75 lbs.), push, pull, bend, squat, reach (from low, level, and overhead), and twist and turn head and trunk to clean, remove trash, move furniture, and equipment.
  • Stand and walk for extended periods of time.

Qualifications

  • One year of custodial experience.
  • Valid driver's license.

Working Conditions

Work is performed indoors and outdoors where significant health and safety considerations exist from physical labor and handling of materials that include waste, chemical solutions, and bloodborne pathogens.

Pay

Refer to salary schedule. Salary range: $130.
