Custodian I

About the role

This position requires working shifts that start as early as 3 a.m. or extend into the evening, including weekends and holidays. Work is performed indoors, in garages, and outdoors in inclement weather. Strict safety protocols must be followed, including wearing personal protective gear during heavy traffic hours in parking facilities. The role involves operating basic tools and materials to clean and maintain parking facilities, such as climbing ladders, stairs, ramps, and using cleaning products and power washers.

Ideal candidate

The ideal candidate is comfortable working with a diverse community of parking customers, residents, and employees. They should be a team player who can work independently, follow verbal and written directions, demonstrate basic computer skills, and uphold professionalism when interacting with diverse populations.

Supervision

Immediate or general supervision is provided by a Custodial Supervisor, Senior Custodian, or higher-level departmental personnel.

Distinguishing characteristics

A Custodian I performs routine custodial activities and traditional janitorial duties, distinguishing it from a Custodian II role.

Responsibilities

• Sweep, vacuum, mop, scrub, strip, wax, and polish floors; shampoo and steam clean rugs and carpets; clean restrooms; empty waste receptacles; dust and polish furniture; wash windows; and perform minor repairs.
• Sweep and wash outside walkways and entrances to facilities.
• Operate a variety of hand and power tools and equipment used in maintaining and cleaning buildings and facilities.
• Lock and unlock building doors.
• Monitor equipment and supply inventory and recommend ordering needed supplies.
• Replace light bulbs and restroom supplies.
• Report safety and sanitary hazards.
• Refer clients and users to appropriate personnel to resolve issues related to furniture arrangements or other problems.
• Perform other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

Knowledge of:

• Basic materials, methods, tools, and equipment used in cleaning and maintaining buildings.
• Materials and methods used in custodial work.
• Use and purpose of common hand tools and equipment used in custodial work.
• Cleaning solvents, soaps, and waxes used in custodial work.
• Standard safety precautions and rules used in custodial work.

Ability to:

• Perform manual labor for extended periods.
• Lift, carry, and pull equipment and supplies weighing up to 50 pounds.
• Push or pull heavy equipment.
• Follow simple written and oral instructions.
• Work outside and indoors in all weather conditions.
• Work irregular shifts, including weekends, holidays, and evenings.
• Read and write English at a level necessary for efficient job performance.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with other employees and the general public.

Qualifications

Experience and education

Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to obtain the required knowledge and abilities is:

• Six months of experience in building custodial and maintenance work.

If education is used to qualify, proof of education (e.g., university/college transcripts and degrees) must be submitted with the application and will be required at the time of appointment. Unofficial documents or copies are acceptable. Applicants with a college degree obtained outside the United States must have their education records evaluated by a credential evaluation service, with the evaluation due at the time of appointment.

Probationary period

Employees must complete twelve months of probation at a satisfactory performance level before gaining permanent status.
