Custodian/Driver

Location: Chicago Temple Corps

Reports to: Corps Officers

FLSA Category: Non-Exempt

Pay Range: $17.60 – $21.11 per hour

About the Role

This position ensures the cleanliness of the Corps facility and coordinates onsite rentals, providing a consistent source of revenue. The Custodian/Driver plays a key role in maintaining the facility, assisting with events, and performing driving duties for The Salvation Army’s programs and operations.

Responsibilities

• Maintenance
  • Complete cleaning tasks on a daily, weekly, and/or monthly basis.
  • Maintain cleanliness of bathrooms, including regular cleaning and restocking of soap and paper products.
  • Vacuum, sweep, and mop floors regularly.
  • Clean windows and mirrors on a scheduled basis.
  • Empty trash and recycling containers throughout the building.
  • Uphold the overall cleanliness and appearance of the Corps facility by following the cleaning schedule.
  • Maintain janitorial supplies and equipment.
• Rentals
  • Assist in coordinating facility rental schedules.
  • Monitor rental of Corps facilities before, during, and after events (including nights and weekends).
  • Open and/or close the Corps for rentals (e.g., weddings, basketball, funerals, and other special events).
  • Serve as an on-site contact for rentals, ensuring the space is clean, safe, and ready for use.
  • Report significant problems related to rentals or Corps property to the supervisor and Corps Officers.
• Driving Duties
  • Drive the Corps van for pickups and drop-offs, including:
    • EDS/DHQ goods.
    • Program participants.
    • Toys from sponsoring companies.
    • Kettle workers.
  • Keep vehicles fueled and ensure they receive regular scheduled maintenance and service checks.
  • Maintain vehicle safety, reliability, and compliance with organizational policies.
  • Report any vehicle issues or problems to the Corps Officers.
• Perform all other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• High School diploma or GED equivalent preferred.
• Knowledge of general cleaning and products.
• Valid Driver’s license and MVR clearance.

Physical Demands & Work Environment

• Moderate physical work, including frequent lifting and/or moving of up to 50 pounds and occasional lifting of up to 100 pounds.
• Frequent walking, use of hands, handling, and reaching with hands and arms.
• Occasional standing, sitting, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling, talking, or hearing.
• Specific vision requirements: close vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
• Regular exposure to outside weather conditions.
• Frequent exposure to moving mechanical parts.
• Occasional exposure to fumes, airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals, extreme cold, extreme heat, risk of electrical shock, and vibration.
