Custodian (Custodian), Housing & Residential Life, Temporary
Under general supervision, the Custodian is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, sanitary, and orderly living and working environment within the Housing Villages. This role performs a full range of custodial services, including cleaning and disinfecting residential and common areas, maintaining floors and furnishings, collecting waste and recyclables, and replenishing restroom supplies.
Responsibilities
- Daily deep clean of resident spaces in preparation for incoming occupants, including bathrooms, kitchens, living rooms, and bedrooms
- Daily cleaning and sanitizing of common areas such as bathrooms, kitchens, lounges, and study rooms
- Vacuum, sweep, and mop floors
- Remove trash from offices, common areas, and classrooms as scheduled; replace liners as needed
- Restock paper products, soap, and sanitizer dispensers; ensure all dispensers remain full with an adequate supply of materials
- Maintain custodial closets free of debris and personal items in a neat, orderly fashion
- Clean vents, laundry machines, appliances, furniture, and equipment
- Wipe baseboards, window sills, door handles, and light switches as required
- Inspect building conditions and report damages to work control
- Coordinate with supervisor to maintain janitorial supplies and equipment
- Conserve resources by monitoring water and electricity usage in buildings
- Respond to cleaning emergencies and set up/break down for special events
- Make minor adjustments to equipment and furniture
- Report facility maintenance needs
- Safeguard assigned buildings
- Operate custodial equipment and tools; transport equipment using university vehicles or electric carts
- Perform other classification-related duties as assigned
Requirements
- Ability to read and write English at a level appropriate to the duties of the position
- Ability to follow verbal and written instructions
- Ability to operate and care for custodial equipment and supplies
- Ability to use custodial systems such as work order tracking and two-way radios
- Knowledge of safety requirements and safe work practices
- Ability to perform work involving regular physical activity
- Ability to establish and maintain cooperative work relationships with staff and students
- Ability to push, pull, lift, and carry loads up to 50 lbs
- Knowledge of methods, materials, chemical disinfectants, and equipment used in custodial work
- Ability to observe and use safe working conditions
- Ability to climb ladders, reach overhead, kneel, bend over, and crouch as needed
Preferred Qualifications
- Prior experience in a Residential Life setting
Pay
Initial salary step placement will be Step 1 - $3,461 to Step 3 - $3,601 per month for qualified candidates. CSU Classification Salary Step Range: $3,461 - $4,725 per month (Step 1 – Step 20).

Schedule
Academic year schedule: Monday through Friday (7:30 am – 4:00 pm), some evenings/weekends.
Summer schedule: Monday through Thursday (7:00 am - 5:30 pm), some evenings/weekends.
Work status: Full-time / Non-Exempt / At-will / Temporary (up to one year with the possibility of further renewal).
