Custodian

About the role

Join Utah Valley University and play an essential role in creating a clean, safe, and welcoming environment that supports student success and campus operations. In this position, you will perform a variety of custodial services, directly contributing to the daily experience of students, employees, and visitors while developing valuable skills in facility maintenance, safety practices, and responsible handling of cleaning products and materials.

This role offers a stable work routine with a dedicated Tuesday-through-Saturday night-shift schedule, exempt from the university’s regular annual rotation process.

Schedule

Tuesday through Friday: 4:30 pm to 1:15 am
Saturday: 2:00 pm to 10:30 pm

Occasional event-related adjustments may require a temporary later Saturday shift.

Responsibilities

• Secure doors and windows of all areas and buildings.
• Assist in emergency procedures, recycling, and pest control.
• Maintain a safe, clean, and comfortable environment conducive to learning for students, visitors, and employees.
• Maintain all types of floor surfaces, fabric surfaces, and upholstery.
• Clean restrooms, including porcelain, stainless steel surfaces, walls, floor drains, and floors.
• Maintain offices, classrooms, labs, conference rooms, dining rooms, food preparation and serving areas, and a ballroom.
• Maintain halls, stairs, elevators, entryways, and lobbies.
• Maintain inventory and clean custodial closets and storage areas.

Requirements

• Graduation from high school (or equivalent).
• At least six months of combined post-high school education and/or directly related full-time experience.

Knowledge

• Proper use and disposal of hazardous chemicals and products.
• Body fluid cleanup and proper protection.
• Proper radio communications.
• Pest control.
• All floor types, such as terrazzo, cement, wood, vinyl, and ceramic tile, as well as carpet fibers, weaves, and backings.
• Waxes, polishes, acids, other chemicals, buffers, extractors, vacuums, and scrubbers.
• Current cleaning techniques and proper cleaning chemicals.

Skills

• Good interpersonal communication skills.

Abilities

• Withstand strenuous and adverse working conditions.
• Follow oral and written instructions.
• Perform skilled custodial duties, equipment maintenance, and minor plumbing.
