Custodian

About the role

Performs cleaning and care of Village public facilities, including the Village Hall, Public Library, Senior Center, Police Department Public Safety Building, and Public Works shop. Reports directly to the Parks and Facilities Manager.

Responsibilities

• Clean floors, carpets, mats, and furniture using methods such as sweeping, vacuuming, mopping, dusting, shampooing, steam cleaning, stripping, waxing, polishing, and/or buffing.
• Dust, clean, sanitize, and/or polish furniture, ledges, and woodwork.
• Empty wastebaskets, recycling bins, and other waste receptacles; reline cans with liners as needed and keep recycling items separate from waste.
• Clean and sanitize restrooms and replenish supplies.
• Clean and sanitize drinking fountains, tables, counters, and telephones.
• Clean indoor surfaces including mirrors, walls, fixtures, blinds, and/or light fixtures.
• Wash indoor/outdoor surfaces including windows, screens, walls, metal, and woodwork.
• Pick up litter from around buildings and grounds.
• Assist in preparing rooms for meetings, conferences, or banquets by setting up/taking down tables, chairs, and equipment.
• Inspect and triage facility maintenance issues:
  • Perform minor maintenance tasks such as removing and cleaning faucet aerators, changing lightbulbs or fluorescent tubes, installing shelving or closet rods, and mounting pictures or decorative wall hangings.
  • Advise supervisor or building managers if a maintenance task requires special knowledge and/or tools.
• Maintain current skills and knowledge in proper and safe techniques for janitorial services and building maintenance.
• Perform snow removal and salting of steps and sidewalk areas.

Requirements

• High School Graduate or GED equivalent preferred; equivalent combination of related education, experience, and training may be substituted at supervisor’s discretion.
• Experience as a custodian or janitor in maintaining facilities preferred.
• Valid Wisconsin Motor Vehicle Operator’s License required.
• Must maintain the ability to lawfully operate designated motor vehicles at all times.

Physical Demands

• Must be able to reach with hands and arms; stand; walk; and use hands to finger, handle, feel, or operate objects, tools, or controls.
• Must occasionally sit; climb or balance; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear.
• Must be able to operate equipment such as floor buffers, steam cleaners, carpet cleaners, washers, vacuum, mops, brooms, dusting equipment, snow removal equipment, hand tools, and power tools.
• Must be able to frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 100 pounds.
• Must meet specific vision abilities required by this job, including close vision and the ability to adjust focus.
• Must be able to tolerate and mitigate risks (through PPE and best practices) of exposure to hazards such as bodily injury, heat/cold extremes, temperature changes, noise, vibration, odors, dust, bodily fluids, toxic conditions, and poor ventilation.
