Custodian

Union position available to SEIU members only during the first week of posting (06/08/26 – 06/15/26). After one week, open to the general public and other members of the Dartmouth community.

About the role

Under supervision from the Residential Operations Custodial Supervisor, performs a wide variety of cleaning and unskilled building maintenance tasks—including heavy lifting—inside and outside the College’s student residential facilities (residence halls, affinity houses, and college-owned Greek houses). Maintains cleaning and bathroom supply inventories, notes repair needs, completes work request forms and damage reports, implements recycling procedures, and communicates effectively with students regarding Residential Operations policies and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Daily: cleans and mops all common-area floors, stairways, public restrooms, kitchen and snack-preparation areas, laundry rooms, study rooms, and lounges; vacuums carpeted hallways and common areas; washes windows in common areas; completes damage reports for common areas.
• Daily (following designated schedules): implements recycling procedures; picks up, bags, and removes all trash inside the building and loose trash around building perimeters to designated areas.
• Weekly: applies appropriate finishes to all common-area floors and stairways; cleans all private bathrooms; completes common-area furniture inventory form, noting missing or damaged furniture.
• Semiannually: washes windows in student rooms.
• Annually: removes and cleans hall light covers.
• As needed: thoroughly cleans student rooms as vacancies occur; changes light bulbs and cleans light fixtures (using ladders when necessary); stocks all bathrooms with supplies and orders bathroom supplies and cleaning materials; checks all room smoke detectors and spring-loaded door hinges for proper operation; removes snow from building entrances (minimum three feet from all entrances) at the start of and throughout the workday; answers students’ questions about ORL procedures and policies and refers students to appropriate ORL offices; assumes responsibility for building trunk rooms (cleaning, arranging items, enforcing trunk-room policy, and providing student access upon request); completes damage reports for student rooms.
• Demonstrates professionalism and collegiality through actions, interactions, and communications with others appropriate to an environment that is welcoming to all.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

Requirements

• Ability to operate and maintain various machines and hand-operated tools (e.g., vacuum cleaners, floor waxers).
• Knowledge of safe use of a variety of chemical substances used for cleaning.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
• Ability to perform strenuous physical labor, including lifting and carrying heavy objects.
• Ability to work from ladders (typically an 8-foot step ladder) to clean light fixtures.
• Ability to work in a residential setting and interact successfully on a daily basis with a culturally diverse student population.
• Willingness to work mandatory overtime as required.
• Strong commitment to a diverse working environment and to serving the needs of a large and diverse community.

Preferred Qualifications

• Successfully completed training in Hazard Communication, Bloodborne Pathogens, Driver Safety, Personal Protective Equipment, and Asbestos Awareness prior to performing related work.

Pay

$24.88 per hour.

Schedule

• Regular full-time, 40 scheduled months per year.
• Two schedule options:
  • 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Friday (Saturday/Sunday off).
  • 8:00 am – 4:30 pm, Monday – Thursday; 6:00 am – 2:30 pm, Sunday (Friday/Saturday off).
• Two consecutive days off with either schedule.
