About the Role
The custodian is responsible for the general maintenance and cleaning of the facility, maintenance of areas around the assigned building, and specific janitorial duties as required. Custodians are considered essential personnel and must be available for emergencies, including severe weather incidents, snow removal, and special events such as Commencement (May) and Orientation/Move-in (August). Overtime and shift adjustments may be required.
Responsibilities
- General cleaning and upkeep of assigned facilities, both inside and outside the building(s).
- Cleaning of dorm rooms, common spaces, offices, classrooms, restrooms, shower rooms, storage areas, and public spaces.
- Floor care, including sweeping, mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing of resilient and wood floor surfaces.
- Maintenance of other hard floor surfaces.
- Cleaning and maintenance of interior spaces and furnishings, including vacuuming and shampooing carpets, dusting curtains/drapes/blinds, and cleaning office/room furnishings, doors, walls, ceilings, and kitchens.
- Cleaning and re-lamping of light fixtures and HVAC air diffusers.
- Window washing of both interior and exterior surfaces, including care of hardware and adjacent surfaces.
- Trash removal from assigned rooms, public spaces, and offices.
- Policing and care of exterior areas, including grass-cutting, trimming, raking, snow removal, and ice control.
- Restroom care, including floor/wall cleaning, fixture disinfecting, and replenishment of supplies.
- Set-up and breakdown of tables, chairs, and other furnishings for events, including dormitory and office furnishings.
Skills
- Good communication skills with the ability to express ideas clearly.
- Ability to cope with numerous interruptions and handle daily interactions with faculty, staff, and students.
- Ability to lift materials weighing up to 30 lbs., occasionally up to 50 lbs. with or without assistance.
- Ability to work collaboratively within the Physical Plant and with all University employees.

Qualifications
- Preferred: Outside experience in institutional cleaning operations (e.g., hotels, hospitals, schools, colleges/universities).
- Applicants must be authorized to work in the U.S. (no immigration sponsorship offered).
Pay
Hourly rate: $14.00 per hour.

Schedule
- Full-time position, 40 hours per week.
- Work schedule determined based on availability.
- Annual schedule: 12 months.
