This position is a regular, FLSA non-exempt, full-time role (80 hours per pay period) with a temporary appointment expected to end May 5, 2027, which could be extended or end prior. A pay period is two weeks, starting on Wednesday and ending on Tuesday.

Schedule

  • Thursday – Monday, 2am - 10:30am
  • Shifts may also be scheduled for 12pm – 8pm or 2am – 10:30am, including weekdays, evenings, and weekends
  • Schedules are subject to change based on the Library’s operational needs
  • Must be able to work weekends and overnight (shift differential applies)
  • Overtime may be required for meetings and trainings

Pay

Salary Range: $27.64 - $33.44 per hour

This position may provide open hours reactive cleaning of neighborhood public branch libraries, responding to urgent and emergent cleaning requests during open hours across the library system. It may also be scheduled for routine overnight cleaning of buildings at various Seattle locations. This classification is part of a bargaining unit represented by AFSCME.

Responsibilities

  • Cleans and sanitizes restrooms, facilities, public areas, and offices in assigned buildings
  • Checks emails at the beginning of the shift to review 360 work orders
  • Responds to work requests, including but not limited to: dry or liquid spills, toilet clogs/overflows, flood cleanup, bio-fluid cleanup (blood, vomit, urine, feces, etc.), graffiti, vandalism, and cleanup of drug paraphernalia
  • Disinfects areas as directed to slow the spread of COVID-19 and other infectious pathogens
  • Gathers and disposes of trash, recycling, and compost waste
  • Replenishes restroom supplies, washes walls and windows, dusts furniture, and polishes metal work
  • Cleans lighting fixtures, windows, windowsills, screens, tops of windows, door frames, and other areas
  • Sweeps outside areas, removes trash, litter, and graffiti
  • Performs spot carpet cleaning and deep cleaning of restrooms as assigned
  • Conducts pressure washing when assigned
  • Covers multiple locations during overnight shifts
  • Replaces exterior trash bins, picks up trash, and blows leaves
  • Assists with event setup and assigned projects at branches and Central Library (CEN)
  • Maintains supply levels and reports evidence of damage and vandalism
  • Attends meetings and trainings as required
  • Works collaboratively as part of a team and provides internal and external customer service
  • Supports a safe work environment, the library’s mission, Community Use Agreement, and Internal Organizational Values
  • Performs other related duties as assigned

Requirements

  • A valid Washington State Driver’s License and access to a vehicle for transporting self to and from various branch work locations (employees are reimbursed for mileage)
  • Minimum of one (1) year commercial or institutional custodial/janitorial experience in a public facility, including cleaning public restrooms, windows, stairs, hard floor surfaces, and carpets
  • Experience providing internal and external customer service
  • Excellent time management, high level of integrity, and demonstrated ability to prioritize, plan, and schedule work efficiently
  • Ability to work alone with minimal on-site supervision
  • Knowledge of and ability to independently perform essential job functions, including lifting heavy objects, using cleaning chemicals, and operating cleaning equipment safely
  • Knowledge of pathogens as they pertain to workplace safety and proper cleaning measures
  • Ability to follow oral and written instructions in manuals, labels, or other work-related materials
  • Effective communication and conflict resolution skills, with the ability to work cooperatively in a diverse team environment
  • Ability to lift up to 20-40 lbs. from floor to overhead several times in a work shift, and up to 50 pounds
  • Competence with Microsoft applications, especially email, and ability to review and close out electronic work requests, request supplies, and complete timesheets using computer applications
  • Ability to submit timesheets and complete online or in-person training
