Custodian

About the Role

Independence Community College is seeking a team-oriented professional to perform custodial work for the facilities. This position includes providing basic building interior and exterior improvement activities, assisting with building and campus activity set-up, identifying specific custodial needs, processing work orders, establishing usage schedules, and completing work list priorities. The Custodian will work closely with the Lead Custodian and the Director of Maintenance to proactively meet facility needs while providing excellent customer service. Additional duties may be assigned for the successful operation of the campus.

Responsibilities

• Provide light building maintenance as assigned, such as changing light bulbs, cleaning light fixtures, and replacing ceiling tiles.
• Assist with basic building interior and exterior improvement activities.
• Assist with building and campus activity set-up.
• Perform duties to promote and preserve the general cleanliness of campus facilities, including but not limited to:
  • Cleaning chalkboards/whiteboards and chalk trays.
  • Cleaning and vacuuming carpets.
  • Sweeping and mopping floors, stairwells, etc.
  • Dusting rooms and offices.
  • Cleaning restrooms.
  • Removing snow and performing other outdoor maintenance tasks.
  • Mopping, stripping, waxing, and buffing floors in food services.
• Empty and clean trash containers inside and outside buildings.
• Assist in maintaining the grounds during inclement weather.
• Ensure buildings are secured during periods of vacancy (e.g., employee vacation, sick time, or personal time).
• Perform other responsibilities necessary for the successful operation of the campus.
• Conduct periodic inventory counts of spare parts, equipment, paper goods, and cleaning supplies.
• Work may be required when the college is closed, on weekends, holidays, and occasional mandatory overtime to meet maintenance department goals, projects, or deadlines.
• Respond to "call-outs" for building emergencies and/or special events.

• Position requires light work with occasional lifting of fifty pounds or more, carrying supplies, and operating equipment.
• Ability to stand for extended periods, walk, and maintain constant movement.
• Frequent standing, walking, repetitive leg and arm movements, bending, reaching forward and overhead, squatting, kneeling, twisting, climbing, and crawling.
• Constant hand grasp required.
• Work is performed in indoor and outdoor settings in all weather conditions.
• Reliable transportation is required.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Demonstrated hands-on familiarity with custodial functions and equipment.
• Ability to mop, sweep, run a floor buffer, empty trash, wash windows, vacuum carpets, shovel snow, and perform other cleaning responsibilities as assigned.
• Ability to lift a minimum of fifty pounds and perform assigned work tasks on a ladder.
• Valid driver’s license and ability to drive is required.
• Strong time management, computer, and organizational skills.
• Team player with a collaborative work ethic and a dedication to maintaining a safe and operational facility.
• Ability to work well with others, accept supervision, and demonstrate a self-starting attitude.
• Professional and congenial interaction with staff and the public.

Schedule

This is a full-time, 12-month position requiring 32 hours per week.
