About the Office

Harris County Precinct One, represented by Commissioner Rodney Ellis, serves approximately 1.17 million residents across 363 square miles. The precinct is diverse, with a population that is roughly 33 percent African American, 38 percent Latino, 21 percent Anglo, 6 percent Asian, and 2 percent other or multiple races. It includes parts of Downtown Houston, notable landmarks such as the Texas Medical Center, NRG Park Complex, and several higher education institutions including Rice University, Texas Southern University, the University of Houston, and Houston Community College.

Precinct One manages over 21 parks, 10 community centers, numerous hike-and-bike trails, three maintenance service centers, and several area offices. The office is committed to delivering responsive public service through inclusive, innovative, and collaborative approaches to improve quality of life, advance equality of opportunity, and promote fair treatment for all residents. Key focus areas include criminal justice reform, economic justice, equitable healthcare access, environmental and climate justice, resilient infrastructure, voting rights, and social and racial justice.

Responsibilities

• Perform daily custodial care of assigned buildings, offices, and facilities in accordance with established schedules.
• Maintain a clean and orderly environment by washing windows, walls, desks, tables, and benches; polishing metalwork and wood surfaces; and dusting furniture.
• Perform floor maintenance, including sweeping, scrubbing, mopping, waxing, vacuuming, and shampooing carpets.
• Clean and sanitize restrooms, including sinks, mirrors, and toilets; empty trash receptacles; and restock soap, paper towels, and other supplies.
• Move, set up, and arrange furniture and equipment to support meetings, events, and operational needs.
• Ensure the security of facilities by properly locking windows, doors, and gates; promptly report any incidents of vandalism, damage, or theft.
• Communicate effectively with staff regarding special custodial needs and facility concerns.
• Maintain basic records of completed work and request supplies in accordance with established procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned to support overall facility operations.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Minimum of one (1) year of relevant custodial or maintenance experience.
• Valid Texas Driver’s License required.

• Working knowledge of modern cleaning methods, materials, and custodial equipment.
• Ability to follow schedules, complete tasks independently, and maintain consistent quality standards.
• Strong attention to detail and commitment to cleanliness and safety.
• Ability to safely operate basic maintenance and cleaning equipment.
• Dependability, professionalism, and a strong work ethic.

Schedule

Candidates must be available to work on-call and have the flexibility to work evenings and weekends as required to meet operational demands.

Work Environment

• Work is performed in both indoor and outdoor settings.
• Regular exposure to dust, fumes, odors, and cleaning agents.
• Occasional exposure to moving mechanical parts, elevated areas, and potentially hazardous materials.

Physical Demands

• This is a physically active position requiring frequent standing, bending, lifting, pushing, and pulling.
• Ability to exert up to 50 pounds of force occasionally.
